I have an irregular shaped patch of skin that is darker than my other skin. It is really only visible under intense light like the sun. Inside it is hard to see in a mirror with standard lighting. Doesn't look like any cancer I have seen. I have a derm. appt in a few weeks, but was wondering can lyme cause a skin discoloration.

It might be melasma, a pigmentation disorder linked to estrogen and excessive copper. Totally benign, but you would do well to increase your zinc uptake and wear heavy sunscreen.
If this is what you have, it should fade if you're conscientious with the zinc and sunscreen. Avoid OTC and prescription preparations to lighten the spots as they often contain mercury.
Birth control pills often trigger it. I had this really badly in my 20s and 30s, but it went away in my mid-40s.

Where on your body is the rash? Have you been playing in tick habitat? Are you white or black? Are you a duke or duchess?

I had it on my face in my 20s and 30s--I was hyperthyroid during much of that time. It can be thyroid related.
It is also called "mask of pregnancy' and a duck will tell you it is normal with birth control--but my father told me not to talk to ducks...
Do you have any other thyroid symptoms/ You might want to check out aboutthyroid.com --Mary Shoman's web site.
Been there done that and got the t-shirt...
