I heard rumors that Suprax is back on the market. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I think it's a penicillin derivative.

Never knew it was pulled from the market!

When Suprax hit the market, it was the only 3rd generation oral cephalosporin on the market. (Penicillins are derived from penicillium mold and cephalosporins from cephalosporillium)

Lederle licensed Suprax from a Japanese pharmaceutical company. It was always marketed as a once a day medication as a sales benefit to bolster sales with doctors and compliance in kids.

But Dr. Russ Johnson U of MN presented evidence in 1992 that Suprax had to be 3-4 times a day in 2-3 times the recommended dose to be effective in eradicating Bb in hamsters. This seems to be true in most adults as well.

Some feel it was withdrawn to prevent generaics from entering the market? I don't really know but companies get pretty protective over expiring drug patents.
