My daughter has a yeast infection and had her local dr prescribe diflucan. She's been taking nystatin. Does she need to stop the nystatin or take them both?

She said she only has 2 diflucan pills. She took one today and takes the other one in 5 days. Does this sound right? Is there anything she can do to keep this from coming back?

I take both.

Have found that yogurt (all dairy) makes my yeast worse now.

YES......the dosage of the Diflucan sounds useless.

If you buy yogurt you'd better look at the sugar content. I can't eat much of it without making the yeast situation worse. I buy Blue Bunny's low carb. It has 5g of sugar...and that's alot.

Take both. Add in some probiotics...acidophilus, bifidus, lactobacillus, sachromyces. You can find this stuff in the refrigerated section of grocery store. No way yogurt alone will provide enough of the cultured good bacteria.

Also candex enzymes sold at health food stores have worked well for me.

Other yeast fighters:

Pau D'Arco exract (bitter but it works well!)

Oregeno Oil extract

Olive leaf extract

And then there is the diet. You can do a search here to find diet info so that you don't feed the yeastie beasties w carbs and sugar.

Thanks for all the input. She was going to get yogurt but it was full of sugar so she didn't get any. She just started on the probiotics today.

Does anyone know what the usual dosage for the diflucan is? I just figured it was something you take every day like the nystatin.

I sure hope she gets over this soon. She is easily discouraged and she already mentioned stopping the abx. She's only been in treatment since March.

Nystatin is safe to take everyday, Diflucan is not. If Diflucan is taken everyday for a month or more, you need to have your liver function checked.

Just to explain...

those who came down on yogurt as an aid are missing the boat - except of course if dairy does you in, yogurt's out.

Otherwise, if your yogurt doesn't have "enough of the cultured good bacteria", you don't have good yogurt!

And of course, as LymeLyme notes, "you'd better look at the sugar content". There should be no added sugar.

Around here (the Left Coast) we have Nancy's, and Pavel's, and a couple others I forget.

Sometimes it's not the label that you put on something, but what's really inside that counts. (no, that's about yogurt not politics).

And here's a politically-incorrect observation, repeated from long ago:

chocolate.

When I was doing IV and oral abx, and intermittently having yeast problems, another thing that helped was - really - chocolate.

Not the sweet milky fatty stuff made with artificial everything, that passes for chocolate. Real chocolate, and with very little sugar.

You're going to have to pay a bit for it, but it's worth it. Around here, we can get organic cocoa powder, no sugar, in bulk. (yeah, sometimes I mixed the powder into my yogurt, no sweetener)

But you may have to settle for something like Newman's Extra Dark or whatever.

I know this idea is counter-intuitive, but those of you who have worked as waitresses in coffee shops already knew it.

Just 'cause nobody's researched it doesn't mean it ain't so! But these are just my observations, your mileage may vary depending on how you drive.

I agree that the yogurt we are offered in the grocery store is pretty pathetic. I sure would like to make my own. Gotta find the time and the recipe!

My old family recipe:

    Ingredients:
  • 1 pint yogurt from the last time (saved in a sterile jar in the fridge); or good live yogurt from the store.
  • 1 gallon milk
  • a bunch of nonfat instant dry milk - try about a half cup, but experiment you may like more or less.

    Procedure:
  • let the starter pint sit out a while to get room temperature.
  • dissolve the powdered milk in the milk.
  • heat the milk, stirring so it doesn't scorch.
  • get tired of stirring, set on low and go read.
  • at the hissing sound, go back to the kitchen.
  • turn off the burner.
  • put the boiled milk in a clean pot, because this one has scorched milk stuck to the bottom (and sides, and outside on the bottom).
  • cool the milk to lukewarm - about the temp you'd make a baby bottle.
  • mix in the starter yogurt.
  • pour 1 pint into a sterile jar for the next time.
  • use the rest to fill clean jars.
  • put all the jars into
    • an oven with the pilot light on,
    • or a big box with a down sleeping bag inside,
    • or equivalent constantly warm spot.

  • let sit for 6-8 hours... overnight is good.
  • that's it!
