Next week I will have to take bicillin with me on a trip which will take about 24 hours from the time we leave home until we reach our destination with a refrigerator. I have a refrigerator thermometer and I have been experimenting with freezer packs, ice cubes in zip lock bags or yogurt cartons etc.

They told me 40 degrees is the ideal temp for the bicillin and the problem so far is that the freezer packs get the temp down closer to 30 degrees, and the ice cubes so far have only lowered to the 50s. As I may not be able to refreeze the freezer pack along the way (airport, long flight, warm weather (Kauai) when we arrive, etc) I am leaning toward the ice cubes as they can be replaced along the way. But temperature control is a problem.

Anyone successful in traveling with a small portable softsided cooler to transport their bicillin? (Or any other method) I have manipulated the timing of my shots so I will only need one shot in the two weeks we'll be gone, but know you can't buy one shot at a pharmacy and hear there is a shortage as well.

Thanks for any help!!

Ann

When I pick up my Bicillin I have to keep it in the car with me for about 2 hours before I can get to the infusion center and into the fridge. I use a soft cooler with a small ice pack. I separate the bicillin from the ice pack with a sock or newspaper.

Newspaper is a great insulator. If you wrap your ice pack in it it will keep it from melting for a long time. It will also keep what is adjacent to it from freezing.

Experiment with this idea.

I have been on bicillan for 8 years and travelled many times with it. It is ideal to keep it refidgerated but when I forst started on the shots my LLMD and nurse researched it and found that technicall Bicillan can be unrefriderated for up to 1 week before it goes bad... SO I think 24 hours will not a any difference. I have don eit many times. Have a nice trip.

Thanks Beachcomber and Christine202! I will try the newspaper and be less worried about keeping it at 40 degrees.
