I was the first diagnosed in my family....then my hubby four years into this...doc thinks it was sexually transmitted..he was treated successfully with three months of doxy...We should all be so lucky. My 18 year old daughter did research with Igenex for her AP Biology course...outer cell protein expression stuff...
She asked to be tested last Fall when her knees started aching. She's really tall, so aching knees at her age aren't out of the question, but we tested her to cover our bases....I honestly didn't think it would come back positive....Silly me....She has lyme and babesia microti....I have lyme anad babesia WA1..
Had my son tested this month....test came back equivocal. We're doing an antibiotic challenge for four days then have the blood work done again to see if the antigen expression is more clear on the western blot for him.
The good part of having your kids tested by the right lab, Igenex, is that you have a base line from a lab that is licensed to do patient testing, rather than investigational or research testing, and is at least recognized by some insurers and all LLMDs.
You can wait til they are on antibiotics for some normal kid thing, then have them tested. You're most likely to get a reliable test that way.
If they do have lyme, you are catching it early and hopefully when it's primarily musculo skeletal rather than neurological....In other words, much easier to treat.
I am terrified of my kids going through what I have been through the last eight years....they will be tested periodically to make sure that they never have to go through my extent of disease involvement.
Bottom line, if they have any symptoms, definitely get them tested...and remember that lyme can present differently in kids. Pre verbal kids can't tell you about the symptoms, so testing is then a good idea anyway.
