My guess is because it's got the consistancy of Elmer's glue.

I could be wrong but I think it's so it pools less. (I remember having a large lump when it was injected too fast.) Although, I don't think it was ever injected over that long a time on me; maybe it should have been. It's been quite a few years since last time I was on it, though.

Bicillin goes into the muscle and is a thick glue like paste. It will create a lump and basically ooze back out if pushed in too quickly. Although 3-5 minutes seems long but I have been on it for 8 months and time flies when you are having fun

If you are having pain with the shot you can use lydocaine (sp?) before to numb the area. I have been pretty lucky - hurts only on the right side and I use biofreeze or Traumeel to dull the ache.
