I have had osteoporosis for many years, take 1200-1500 mg Calcium w/D, drink at least one glass milk daily, eat lots Eng walnuts/almonds, get lots of sunshine (except in the winter) etc., and just had a Vitamin D test done, and I'm low.

I remember Dr. C saying some Lyme pts are malnutritioned due to Lyme, and now I believe it.

So, my endo has prescribed FosamaxD instead of my usual Fosamax, in the hopes that will raise my D level.

Anyone else have this problem even though you are taking a lot of vitamins? It's depressing...

Thanks for any help.

This is an interesting question...hypoparathyroidism results in symptoms similar to chronic lyme, and sometimes causes hypomagnesia, which is definitely common in lyme...I've wondered about this myself...however, measurements of serum calcium and phosphorus should establish whether or not there is a problem...none the less, I started taking calcium citrate in addition to magnesium recently, as an experiment...no D supplements yet.

I would suggest that you look at 2 articles. One is at http://members.aol.com/SynergyHN/vitd.html and the other at http://members.aol.com/SynergyHN/MPall.html .

One may lose bone and it may appear to be a vitamin D deficiency, but that is because the measured 25D is converted to an excessive degree into the unmeasured, but active 1,25 D hormone form. This excess can cause bone loss.

As I mention in another post I am making today. I improved by reducing D and going on the Marshall Protocol.
