Anyone ever have one, or surgery to fix it..It is when the stomach goes thru the diaphram into the body cavity..

I am to have surgery to repair my spincter at the esophagus and to have the stomach repositioned..I would love to put this off but the drs say gang green is a possibility if I wait..and stomachs are needed..

Just wondered if anyone could offer advise on what is in store. I was told initially 5 days in the duck hotel and months of recovery and now I am able to have the laproscopic(sp?) proceedure so will not have to stay as long..Begged to get it done that way due to daughter's health..so thank goodness for that..

Any pointers will be appreciated..lymemomtooo

Sorry about this. Don't know a thing to help you. Maybe someone else will. Good luck. Glad to hear they can do it laparoscopically. Maybe someone can let us know when it happens?

Is that anything like a hiatal hernia? I have a hiatal hernia and I thought I read that is lets your stomach push up into your chest. I think it's pretty common, they pretty much just told me to live with it. Yours sounds like something else though.

Someone asked if this is like a hiatal hernia. yes and no.. It is the hiatus going up into the chest cavity (I have a sliding hiatal hernia, meaning it goes up and down) a paraesophageal hernia is when the stomach goes up and gets stuck and eventually that portion of the stomach, for lack of a better word is strangled, blood flow is cut significantly and it can turn gangrenous which is why surgery is needed in this case. I"m really sorry to see you're going through this just be SURE to make sure you have a GOOD surgeon who has done this MANY times.
As for references of those maybe you can speak to and ask him HOW MANY of these operations he's done...

yes, to lymeloco..THe Dr called the proceedure liproscopic nissen fundoplication. To "I have", yes he came highly recommended..But to be safe, I am updating important papers, etc, since I think this is a little scarry..

Apparently a large portion of my stomach has gone thru the diaphram..People pay good money to have the stomach banded or stapled to loose weight..You would think that I should be skinny, but no..I have no such advantage from this..

Thanks for the replys..
