My doc has me on Omnicef and added Levaquin for the Bart. I started it and am having muscle problems (which are my main Lyme symptom). I don't think I can tolerate it. What is another possible abx?
He also has me on nor-triptoline which is a mild antidepressant because he found that my parasympathetic nervous system is out of whack. I take the antidepressant at night at a low dose to improve relaxation of the systems controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system.
whatever Bart drug I take would have to be okay to take with Omnicef and nor-triptoline.
Any suggestions?
I really would rather a natural approach vs abx. So if anyone knows anything other than abx to treat Bart, I would welcome those suggestions, too.

It sounds like you and I are on similar treatments and have had similar reactions. My LLMD may try having me go back on Levaquin (I went off after two weeks) but we have to discuss it more. I do know people who've been on Rifampin for Bartonella, but just know going in that it can be hard on the liver and can also cause some hormonal imbalances in women.
Hopefully others will post with additional suggestions.
By the way, how did you and your doctor determine your parasympathetic nervous system is out of whack? My doctors and I agree something has become very wrong with mine - although my internist was talking more about my autonomic nervous system based on symptoms. I've tried a few different things to calm it down but will look into what your doctor prescribed.

Healing Lyme (it's a good book) recommends Japanese knotweed, Boneset tea and Red root tincture for treating Bart.

I used rifampin, ketek, and tons and tons of liver support for bartonella. I ramped up on low doses of rifampin for two months, then did the standard 600mg/day for five months. There may be some people on the board right now who are exploring different dosages, both higher and lower.
This bartonella treatment was taken at the same time as omnicef. The liver supports were Dr. Zhang's Hepa Formula 2, N-acetyl choline (NAC), CoQ10, and phosphatidylcholine. Some other liver supports are alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle, and maybe chlorella--that's something GiGi knows a lot about. You would definitely want to take a few of these, not just a milk thistle or two.
And then there's the whole probiotics thing--I tried and tried to get away with buying a cheap probiotics, but there was no way. I ended up with prescription nystatin, probiotics, and an herb extract called coptis, because of an ingredient called berberine. You can also find it in goldenseal. If you do check out these herbs, apparently they need to be pulsed, with regular breaks.
Be forewarned that the rifampin herx can be extreme. I had two herxes, and each one lasted approximately six weeks. Since others have described a similar experience, it seems okay to share as a possible obstacle.

Can Bart be treated with Azithromycin? Burascono mentioned that it is used for children with suspected Bart.

Zith is good all around as a standard ABX to be on while adding another med specifically to target a co-infection. While on IV zith my LLMD has done runs of other meds to target specific c0-infections. My bart is still lingering but came down quite a bit on the Zith. We have now added cipro for Bart. We did not want to use leviquin yet. On my 3 day ofthe cipro and I know something is gong on. The bottom of my feet are burning and I have other neuro areas that are hot. And my throat has started to clear. I don't remember the limitations of having a child use cipro. I think sometime it is forgotten that cipro can be effective on bart.

I have had Lyme since 1987. I went into remission on just two years of amoxy for 6 years. Then relapsed badly in 2000. Wasted almost 4 years on amoxy and have been on bicillin IM for a year. It has helped a great deal. But man, do I crash FAST , if I stop ABX.
Recently I suspected I have Bart and maybe erlichia as I have a postive band 45. My feet and palms burn. Soles hurt in the AM like I have been beaten with a ping pong paddle. Also have had swollen lymph nodes in the neck, they never go down
I started Azithromycin 3 days ago. So far the swelling on the inside of the right side of mouth has gone down, first time in 6 years thats happned. Thats probably Lyme and the 7th cranial nerve. But most welcome to disapear.
This is the first time ever I have had an ABX other than amoxy or bicillin. So I should add something else to get the bart? Or maybe stay on Zith for awhile and monitor. So hard to figure this stuff out.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I may look into doing the herb treatment first, although I have read that Buhner's protocol for Bart is not as effective as his Lyme protocol.
Jill, my doctor (who specializea in CFS/Fibro and has recognized that Lyme is a main cause of those syndromes) performed an ANSAR test. Ask your doc about that one.
Does anyone know if Cipro or Azith is safe during pregnancy? My gyno says a cephlasporin based abx is okay.
