Hello everyone. I've been in lyme treatment for over a year now, and I seem to have a reaction to Zithromax. Around last august or so, when I was on a Mepron/Zithromax combination, I developed an acne-like rash on my chest and back, which faded after the protocol was complete. Since then, no other antibiotics have caused such a reaction.

Recently I started on a twice daily Alinia/3x weekly Zithromax regiment, and the rash is starting to show up again, though not as extensively as before.

Has anyone encountered this sort of behavior with Zithromax alone? None of the mino/doxycyclins, cepholosporins, or amoxycillin type antibiotics caused the problem.

I'm a young man in my early 20s and have most likely been afflicted with lyme for the past six years or so, so its hard to judge how much acne is normal, but I have the feeling that it is related to lyme in some way. This apparent Zithromax reaction however, is different from my "normal" acne.

Does this sound like a herx reaction, or simply a drug allergy? My LLMD believes it could very well be a drug allergy as it is so closely tied to one particular antibiotic. Then again, I'm a little nervous as I don't tend to herx noticibly with any other treatment, so in the back of my mind I keep thinking that maybe this is "working", even though I don't feel especially better or worse.

Any insight? Thank you.

It could be a release of toxins... Are you detoxing at all?

I'm not sure exactly what detoxing entails, but I'm taking a huge amount of herbal supplements prescribed by my doc. I'm fairly sure some of them are for detoxification.

Edit: One thing I forgot to add- Given my reaction to Zith (maybe?) last time, my doc had me go on the alinia by itself for a week before adding the zith. The rash did not appear until after the zith was added.

Update- Spoke to my doc, and he advised me to discontinue the Zithromax for a week to see if the rash clears up. He's not sure if its a release of toxins or not.
