okay--so I have had ice pick jabs for years, but since starting the cipro/rifampin combo for bart---OUCH! (this is my 3rdish month of treatment for bart, mostly cipro alone)
What are these ice pick jabs? Like someone is sticking a pin into me, but NOT the pins and needles feeling---this is ONE pin prick. Sometimes stays for a good 15 seconds which is LONG and sometimes makes my muscle jerk.
I thought for a minute there you had stolen the ice pick that gets inserted into my head every night -- the one that goes in the eye socket and out the back... thought I might have to come rough you up a bit to gimme back my icepicks!
Seriously, I'm sorry you get this. (I get something similar sometimes -- shooting stabbing pains and lots of twitching and jerking.) Hope it goes away soon!

I remember one day when it felt like I was getting stung by hornets- lasted about 15 minutes-and then subsided.
And then there was the day it felt like a huge darning needle was stuck in my big toe-trying to get out.
But no I have not been attacked by ice picks yet.
But I'm not on Cipro and Rifampin-I'm on Ceftin,Doxy and Flagyl. When do they start subtracting the abx instead of adding ?

Sounds awful trails... Are they all over your body, or just one place? I got some bizarre stuff on Rifampin, weird motion sickness sensations of floating and pin pricks. Anyone else?

Trails, The first red flag I saw was Cipro. Here are some of the warnings [from www.rxlist.com] [quote] Peripheral neuropathy:
Rare cases of sensory or sensorimotor axonal polyneuropathy affecting small and/or large axons resulting in paresthesias, hypoesthesias, dysesthesias and weakness have been reported in patients receiving quinolones, including ciprofloxacin.
Ciprofloxacin should be discontinued if the patient experiences symptoms of neuropathy including pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness, or is found to have deficits in light touch, pain, temperature, position sense, vibratory sensation, and/or motor strength in order to prevent the development of an irreversible condition.
Tendon Effects:
Ruptures of the shoulder, hand, Achilles tendon or other tendons that required surgical repair or resulted in prolonged disability have been reported in patients receiving quinolones, including ciprofloxacin.
Post-marketing surveillance reports indicate that this risk may be increased in patients receiving concomitant corticosteroids, especially the elderly.
Ciprofloxacin should be discontinued if the patient experiences pain, inflammation, or rupture of a tendon.
Patients should rest and refrain from exercise until the diagnosis of tendonitis or tendon rupture has been excluded.
Tendon rupture can occur during or after therapy with quinolones, including ciprofloxacin. [end quote]
I had symptoms in both those areas with cipro and other fluoroquinolones. The tendon problems were the worst and I still have effects from that.
I think you should discuss your "ice-pick pain" with your doctor ASAP.
I had a lot of pains I called "zingers," during all the worst of Lyme disease. They could be anywhere, but were mostly on legs. Felt like a yellow-jacket sting!

Thanks so much everyone!
mini--sorry you get this too! I think I will meet you tomorrow at the movie so we could trade ice picks okay?
cobweb--when do they start subtracting abx? When you are BETTTTTTTER! until then, my friend, force be with you!
MrG-- glad to know I am not alone but geez what the heck is this--huh?
Wild condor--yeah they are all over--mostly in my lower half though.
Ann-oh-- Thanks for the direct info and finding and pasting it here for me to read again! I have known about cipro and nueropathy. I chose cipro instead of levaquin coz it does has LESS risk, but still there. I had to be on a floroquinalone coz I had several surgeries this summer dealing with my ureter and urinary tract and that class of drug is used to treat infections in that area of your body. The good news was that I was about to treat BART anyhow---so hoped that I could kill 2 with one stone?? I dont think I am experiencing anything out of the ordinary for my own lymie self. You know how we each KNOW in our gut if what we are experiencing is normal for US? Well this is an increase in the jabs, but not anormal and guess what?
BIG NEWS:
I GOT MY PEEEEEERIOD!
And I was on continuos birth control--not suppsoed to get my period. But I think with all the abx--it blocked the effects of the hormones and I started bleeding.
I ALWAYS have an increase in symptoms with my period. So I got my explaination of WHY to some degree. I have been having an increase in ALL lyme symptoms in the last few days, but this pin prick thing really upset me last night. Today it happens to be less but my muscles feel like I ran a marathon and they are all tight.
from the frying pan.....
