I was on 200 mg/day of doxy for a month before starting IV rocephin a week ago. I'm well aware that I need to be replacing all the healthy bacteria that's being destroyed.

Suddenly I find myself unable to eat even a spoonful of plain yogurt without blowing up like a hot-air balloon. Same thing happens with even one probiotic capsule. My stomach feels tight as a drum and I can't eat for hours. It's miserable.

I tried Florastor and had no problems with that at all. But with the IV rocephin, along came vaginal yeast. So now I'm on daily diflucan, which kills Florastor.

I don't understand why these symptoms appear when I consume even the smallest amount of yogurt or probiotics. Does this indicate massive yeast overgrowth, by any chance? If so, that's bad news, since I'm now on diflucan--which, by the way, is not destroying the yeast, at least not completely.

What to do? Any ideas? Help!!!

Peggy

Sorry to hear about the bloating and problmes.

A few thoughts..

1. Check your probiotics to see if they are "milk-free".. and have no FOS in them. Those two things can make you feel as you describe.

2. Nystatin?

3. Monistat.. like instructed in Dr. B's guidelines.. for TWO weeks.

4. H pylori?

Hope that helps some?

I agree that FOS can do this. MAN O MAN that stuff is bad for me. That feeling sux.

I found that eating whole kefir grains and home made kefir have helped that feeling. I also take theralac probiotic and it has evened me out.

good luck!

I never could get away with eating yogurt for the yeast. The store bought kind has too much sugar. You might try the low carb stuff. [Blue Bunny has one with 5 grams of sugar.]

At any rate, I'd give it up and get on Theralac. That stuff is incredible! www.theralac.com

Also you MUST FOLLOW THE YEAST FREE, SUGAR FREE, LOW CARB DIET or you will regret it BIGTIME!

Lyme symptoms list compared with yeast symptoms

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements.
[e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

Thanks for all the info and ideas, everyone. I did check my probiotic--it doesn't contain dairy but it does contain 300 mg FOS per capsule. The yogurt that caused the exact same symptom--severe bloating--was plain, organic, and sugar free. And I ate no more than 4 bites.

I think I may have made my question confusing by mentioning yeast. I know that I have yeast, and I know the things necessary to treat it. I've been down this road before.

What's confusing me is this: I get severe bloating whenever I eat even a few bites of yogurt or take one probiotic capsule. "Severe" means I can't eat for maybe 24 hours.

This has never happened before, and it's a real problem not only because I can't eat but also because I can't replace the healthy bacteria being destroyed by the rocephin.

I mentioned the yeast because I'd been doing fine on Florastor but had to stop that when I started on diflucan. And I wondered if the yeast itself might be causing the bloating. But bloating happens ONLY when I consume probiotics.

I'm stumped. And concerned. I need to get some healthy bacteria into my system.

Maybe try different probiotics? I get terrible gas and bloating from theralac [Frown]

I can, however, take others without any problem -- no idea why!!??!

Hang tough with the diflucan ... it may take a while to knock the yeast down to a manageable level, but diflucan is a great drug for a lot of us. Some strains of yeast are resistant to it, however, so you may need a cocktail of antifungals for a while. If you are getting vaginal yeast, you can be pretty sure it is growing elswhere in your body, too....

Hope you feel better soon!!!!!!!!!!!!
