In the article called "10 questions that could save our life" under the back and joint pain:
Lyme disease. It often presents as joint pain with or without the famous "bull's-eye" rash. Up to 25 percent of Lyme victims never see a rash and consequently don't connect their joint pain with the disease. Lyme and its associated conditions are usually transferred by deer ticks. If caught early, Lyme disease can usually be easily treated with antibiotics. If it's caught late, the treatment can be complex and the effects devastating.
And under flu: "I'm still feeling terrible. Considering my medical history, what else could be wrong with me?"
You're directing your doctor to narrow the list of possible diseases, tests and treatments. The details of your history and symptoms should lead the investigation to the right answer, helping your MD catch the problem and possibly save your life. For example, your doctor might recommend a chest x-ray or CT scan to spot pneumonia or the early stages of lung cancer. Or she may run blood tests to find infections like mononucleosis, strep, staph and Lyme disease.
Not a whole lot said there, but at least they're mentioning it at all!

Thanks for sharing this, HG!
This is definitely a step in the right direction! For too many years Lyme hasn't even been suggested in media as a possibility for these problems. It's great to see it getting some press with RD!

Reader's Digest has been sympathetic to lyme sufferers for quite some time.
Am I right in thinking that articles are submitted for review to publish in RD? Is there someone who has a good, comprehensive and to the point submission that might be published by them???
There's the challenge! I'm not much of a writer or I'd do it myself.

Personally, I think RD is hostile to Lyme. As far as I know they haven't published a good article about Lyme since the early 90's. I doubt they'd let anyone but a doc write a medical piece. Why?
Just look at the plethora of drugs advertised. Must be at least half the mag. Many Lymies have concluded Big Pharma has been Lyme-hostile ever since their vaccine went bust. Then they figured out they could make far more money on Lymies who are treated for other diseases (they don't have) and BigPharma still makes money on abx and symptomatic treatment for those that do have Lyme. Win-win for them.
I must commend the doc who wrote the article though for daring to mention Lyme not once, but twice. Unfortunately, my estimation of her character was short-lived:
What she wrote about flu deaths is so far wrong it should be plutoed. She included "flu" figures docs parrot, which enable them to scare patients into getting flu shots. Did you know all deaths from pneumonia are lumped together with deaths from flu? And that the deaths from flu in the US are an infinitesimal proportion of the lump?
I had the 2005 figures somewhere but can't find them. Would one you search mavens look for the info? I think it was an actual breakdown of MMWR/Annual figures for "flu".
