Hello.

I have recently relapsed w/Lyme and my doc is trying to treat my ongoing yeast. I had problems with diflucan, sporanox and nizoral. Now am starting Nystatin slowly. The second evening I took one pill and all night I was quite itchy. No rash. Itching isn't listed as a possible side effect. Has anyone had this happen and continued with no ill effects? I really need to take something!

Thanks for your input--
Eloise

I often itch when I have alot of yeast, or yeast die - off. So this could be a reaction to the die - off, but I would ask your LLMD to be safe.

I also take for yeast control:

Refrigerated Acidophilus (50 Billion a day)
Caprylic Acid
Oil of Oregano
Olive leaf Extract
Pau D' Arco
Grapefruit seed Extract
Garlic

I wonder if maybe it's from die-off of the yeast?

Are you allergic to any dyes??

Thank you both for your answers. I hadn't thought of the dye question but that's a good point--I'm not allergic to dyes that I know of. I talked to my doc and he said that he never heard of an allergic reaction to Nystatin (tho always possible). He said it was unusual but not unheard of to have a die off reaction so soon so he suspects this could be it. So I am to proceed with caution. He said to take charcoal to help bind the yeast toxins and that that might help if this is a herx thing.

Thanks very much.

Hi Elosie

I haven't itched from diflucan. Could you be allergic or maybe a yeast die off as suggested by lymetoo? Did you call your LLMD back yet?

Be careful not to take the diflucan or other supps or meds at the same time as the charcol. It can interferr with absorbtion of these. Best to space the charcol out.

Take care
Dana

Hi Dana,

Thanks for pointer about charcoal. My doc said to continue as long as itching doesn't worsen or turn into a rash. He said if it is a herx, the itching will go away in a few days.

I was on Diflucan for 8 days and I didn't itch from that. But it seems that different strains of yeast are sensitive to different anti-fungals. Maybe mine is particularly sensitive to Nystatin.

Thanks for your help,
Eloise

I think it's pretty COMMON to have die-off from Nystatin. My dr begins patients with a low dosage and then you work your way up.

I would think one pill causing a die-off would be kinda rare, though!

Lisi.....Looks like we posted at the same time! [Great minds think alike!??]

Yes, my doc said very rare to have die off from two doses. However he said he had a patient who took a quarter of a pill and had itching that went away after a few days of the Nystatin. He said that die off like that can happen although unusual to happen so quickly.

If anyone else here has had die off so quickly, it would be great to know. My doc is the real mccoy though and I believe him.

Hi Eloise,

I got itchy from Nystatin. I just started taking it with my initial treatment with Doxycycline, 10 days ago. I noticed when I missed a dose that I stopped itching. I'm not sure if it's allergy or something else. The skin is red and inflamed and irritated.

I'm a total newbie to this whole thing, so .
