I just found an article that says the FDA is accepting public comment until April 30th on a plan to regulate supplements, herbs, and juices as "drugs".

www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_4803.cfm paints a very scary picture.

Can this be true?

This isn't really about testing the safety and purity of supplements. Its about converting these to DRUGS so you'll have to buy them through a prescription at vrey high prices not covered by insurance, This is just legal trickery to circumvent the DSHEA, Supplement safety and other issues are addressed by the Office of Dietary Supplements, which was formed by DSHEA.

If you want to loose your right to CAM, cam modalities, and revert to a society of minuscule RDA supplements. Youll be sorry later on.

As for independent research, it depends on WHO is doing the research, their agenda, who's is backing the research.

you can't trust research of any kind, and that includes medical research, padded by the relationships to pharm co.s the FDA has been guilty of releasing drugs BEFORE COMPLETELY TESTED AND SAFETY ESTABLISHED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree Sue ! I just get mad when I hear about people who spend alot of money on misinformation.
The Codex commission ,(look it up) has been targeting the U.S. for a long time. This commission is already established in Europe and we are a member. They want to do exactly what you describe.

According to the website www.vitamins-for-all.org, the guidelines that Codex seeks to put into effect are designed to benefit the global pharmaceutical industry. If these guidelines pass, statements about the beneficial effects of vitamins and other supplements would be banned and punishable by law. Access to dietary supplements would become severely restricted; and the pharmaceutical industry, not governments, would become the definer of what is food and what is medicine. According to one of the Codex delegates, Josef Hasslberger, most of the members of the Codex nutrition committee remain ignorant of decades of research that has established the benefits of high-dose vitamin usage.

I will fight it all the way !

It's ramping up. DDS attacks are occuring on health sites that put some sunlight on this issue.

In the very near future we may be hiding our naturopathic Drs names like we do the LLMDs. Is this the home of the free or what?

The best organization to work with on this issue is the World Institute of Natural Health Sciences, or http://www.winhs.org

The international forces that want to take over healing in the US have done an end-run around the Health Freedom legislation passed in the US some years ago and plan, by using the food and supplements standards in Codex Alimentarius (Code of Foods) to make supplements, herbs, and some foods into DRUGS that need a prescription!! this would be done by enforcing trade sanctions against the US for "non-compliance."

It is no accident that pharmaceutical industry has been buying up vitamin ingredient suppliers and trying to convince people that supplements should be tested and regulated.

Check out the website http://www.winhs.org for full data!!

Love,

Cass A

Guys,

Please don't trust blindly in this "petition".

Many of us don't believe it's valid, based on the very scary past of Rima Laibow and the organization that's originating this spam.

Here's some more info (which happens to come from a hyptotists' association, but it applies to everyone):

quote:

Dear Member,

Recently you may have received an alarming email expressing a claim that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is attempting to regulate Complementary and Alternative care. We are sending this email to you so that you can be reassured that this is nothing to be concerned about.

In 1994 Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). Under this Act the manufacturer of dietary supplements and similar products is responsible for the safety and purity of the product before it reaches the market. The FDA takes action after a product has reached the market if a concern about its safety or purity has been raised. The FDA has no authority to regulate a product that isn't a threat to public health and cannot take initiative to expand its authority unless expressly authorized to do so by Congress.

As part of its ongoing mandate to insure the safety of dietary supplements, the FDA is preparing to issue a guide to the products on the market to help consumers and regulators distinguish between those products that are regulated as unsafe (for example, lead-contaminated herbs), regulated as cosmetics (for example, herbal skin peeling creams), regulated as drugs (for example, cannabis), or regulated as food (for example, vitamins and most supplements).

The report is advisory, but will be useful in light of recent findings that some herbal products may have profound physical effects. For example, the February 2007 edition of the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE published findings that Lavender Oil and Tea Tree Oil appear to seriously increase the production of estrogen in men and women. Findings such as this may well lead the FDA to issue an advisory that these substances should not be used casually in creams and lotions.

The FDA is presently in a comment period to allow the makers of such products to bring information to the FDA concerning the category they believe their products should fall into. If you want to read the whole proposal, you can find it at www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKET.../E7-3259.htm. If you make your living manufacturing vitamin pills, herbal capsules, cosmetics or similar substances, you should pay attention to what the FDA is doing as it may have some impact on you.

You may notice that nothing about this matter concerns the practice of hypnotism, nor can it. The FDA is only concerned about Complementary and Alternative Medical Products and Devices. That is, they are only empowered to regulate substances and medical appliances. They have no authority to regulate an activity such as hypnotism.

The emails that have been circulating raise an alarm claiming that this is the first step toward total government regulation of hypnotism and similar practices. In our opinion this is a gross exaggeration. The FDA barely has the resources to regulate what is within its mandate now. Any attempt to expand that mandate would require a new Act of Congress, and no such Act is contemplated. The only extension before Congress is to bring pet food under better FDA oversight in the wake of the recent problems with Menu Foods, Inc., that sold products harmful to the dogs and cats who ate them. It is far from clear that even this extension will actually become law.

While we are sure that some people circulating these emails are acting in good faith, it appears that some of the activity has a profit motive.

In several of the emails examined, concerned persons are directed to an alarming web site with an official-sounding name. Once there, they are asked to enroll by giving their contact information, and to list the contact information of other interested persons who then receive similar emails.

The web site appears to capture this information to create a mailing list that can be used for marketing purposes by companies selling vitamin supplements and similar products. Those who know how to use header information to browse web sites will discover, as did we, that these sites appear to actually be on-line vitamin stores. Apparently, this is something called Guerilla Marketing.

The National Guild of Hypnotists maintains a nation-wide watch on laws and regulations that might affect your freedom to practice hypnotism. We have acted aggressively and successfully whenever actual threats have appeared, and we have a long history of success. While we must all remain vigilant, we need to be mindful that some people will encourage rumors for their own economic gain.

Here's what the Organic Consumers Association (first link above) thinks of the alert:

OCA Web Note, April 16, 2007: While the OCA was initially very concerned about this alert, which we recieved from Mike Adams' News Target organization, after painstaking review of the FDA guidance document we have determined that the document does not call for any NEW regulatory or enforcement action, but merely clarifies existing ways that the FDA classifies (or "thinks") about different types of products used in alternative and complementary medicine. After some discussion with our colleagues in the natural health freedom movement, we have decided that this document is not of any real significance.

This is not to say that we are happy with the FDA. We are NOT. Due to political appointees from the pharmaceutical and agribusiness industries, they've been asleep at the wheel with GMO, synthetic food additive, and pharmaceutical safety testing. It is high time they subject these products to the same type of rigourous scrutiny they seem to have for natural health products. And should the FDA decide to further target natural, non-synthetic health products, we will hit back with all our might.

Though we disagree with Mr. Adams on this matter, we reprint his alert in the spirit of free and open discussion.

Here's a discussion I'm part of (I'm 'girl Mark' on that thread) where we question the motive behind the sudden widespread spam hitting everyone's inbox about this subject, and the motives of healthfreedomusa/natural solutions foundation and Rima Laibow:
