My daughter is having a horrible time sleeping. Is there anything children can take to help them sleep better while they get treated for Lyme?
Thanks

You might ask your doctor about a small amount of melatonin. It comes in flavors and can be disovled under the tongue. We have found less is better. My daughter takes .5 mg at night along with other things, but she is 15.

Benadryl? I'd definitely ask your LLMD about it first.

I've only given it to my daughter (knock on wood, as far as I know she's lyme-clear) a few times but it knocks her right out. However, it can make some children hyper, so if you decide to try it try it during the day first so you know how she'll react.

Best of luck to you. [Smile]

*Edit* Oh my gosh, can't believe I forgot to mention this--have you ever just tried warm milk with honey? That can really work.

Hi Monica:

If you want something gentle that won't interfere with meds you could try homeopathy. I've seen this product available in drug stores and health stores.

Nice thing is it's inexpensive and if it doesn't work you're not out much.

Hyland's Calms Fort 4 Kids combines 8 safe single natural remedies to offer children natural, non-sedative, non-habit forming remedy that temporarily relieves nervous tension, irritability, restlessness and sleeplessness.

This homeopathic medicine for children aged 2 years and older also relieves symptoms that can keep children from sleeping well, including night terrors, travel restlessness and growing pains. A calmative solution to restlessness, Hyland's Calms Fort 4 Kids comes in easy-to-administer tablets that dissolve almost instantly in the mouth.

Its unique formulation works without side effects and will not interact with other medications.

Homeopathic Ingredients: Aconitum nap, Calc. phos, Chamomilla, Cina, Lycopodium, Natrum mur, Pulsatilla, Sulphur

Thanks everyone, I have tried Benedryl and it does not work at all on her. I will check out the clams forte for kids and also call the naturopath for suggestions.

Nc from Systemic Formulas of Ogden, UT should work well. Have your ND call them if you are interested. Or check www.systemicformulas.com

The use of homeopathics is a great suggestion, too.

I would go with low dose melatonin, it's safe as far as the research I've seen is concerned. .5 mg should do the trick. Even if it's not slow asborbing it'll probably get him to sleep.

Do not give a higher dose, most Lyme patients make the mistake of using 3mg or more to start and end up feeling like a train hit them -- then they assume it doesn't work. Start "low."

These are suggestions that you can research and then talk with your doctor about. Melatonin is dirt cheap too and accessible at any pharmacy OTC.

I am not a physician, so do your own research to confirm any ideas given and then speak with a health care provider you trust.

I can't take melatonin as it drives me up the wall, literally.

Have you tried hot lowfat milk?

With my 13 yr. old I use a combo of Benadryl, melatonin and L-Theanine (found at Health Food store). It works fairly well most of the time.

Marla

P.S. If you can find the L-Theanine in a sub-lingual spray, it works best.
