Hi,

I was told that the SPECT needs to be done 10 days after, to 10 days before, menstruation.

Does anybody know why this is the case?

Have others been told this?

I am assuming it is because there would be even less blood in the body or something, which could actually give a higher incidence of positive readings on the SPECT (due to reduced blood flow to the brain?)... but I am curious.

Thanks!

That's interesting. Did Columbia tell you this themselves?

I have had 3 SPECT scans, and my daughter has had numerous as well---this was never mentioned.

They do run a pregnancy test before each SPECT (since it's radioactive and all...) But, that's the only feminine issue ever brought up..(To me at least)

Post what you find out! Thanks!

I think it has to do with the pregnancy test. If you are close to menstruation, they can clearly test to see if you are pregnant. If it is more towards the middle of the month, the test is not as conclusive. I am not sure this is the reason, but that's the feeling I got.

BTW, I just had mine done there two weeks ago. They're really nice. Bring a book, you'll be there a while!

Thanks you guys.

My doctor's office told me, and this was after I informed them that there was no chance of my being pregnant....

Maybe they didn't believe me?

I think that, in order to become pregnant, one must come into contact with the opposite sex - if I am not mistaken!

I was told this by my parents when I was just a wee lass - this was after they fessed up about lying about the stork.

I will keep you posted if I learn anything more!

When I got my IUD in (too much information) they made me come in during my period. I asked and asked about why and they finally confessed that it was to be sure I wasn't pregnant. So, they can be kinda tricky about those sorts of things -- the unborn and all... Can't be too careful.

And I don't think the radiation they squirt into you would be good for a developing body. Now the one that is already developed, not sure....

I'm glad you're getting a SPECT, luvvie.

We should talk soon about your appt and all that.

Hope you're well.

[kiss]

Thanks Allie! This sort of confirms my suspicion!

Yes, let's talk this weekend. Very exciting visit!

This will be my first SPECT ever.

RI requires preauthorization for this procedure now by the way. This is a recent development.
