My friend just got out of the hospital where she was given 2 units of blood. She has not been rx'd any antibiotic - it that the usual protocol after a blood transfusion? How well do they screen blood? Would they...for example screen for TBDs and be able to detect them? Peedie

i'd have your friend get on ANTIBIOTICS FOR 2 UNITS OF BLOOD!! i'm not a dr.
they do NOT check for co-infecitons except MALARIA!!!
i went thru this last year and gve my own blood.
1 woman in pj langhoff's IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD PATIENT STORIES said she got donated blood giving her LYME AND CO-INFECTION!!!!
personally, i'd rather be safe than sorry and take antibiotics in case they have lyme/other infections in blood!!!
in future, have her donate her own blood ahead of time!!

No..there is no screening for TBD's...My daughter gave and all they said something like it was ok since she was not having a current infection.
Of course my daughter agreed since she doesn't want to still have this crap..
I had to go down and explain the danger of her blood and her suicide attemps in front of everyone. There was no privacy..
A week later, the lady in charge of the Chesapeake Region or something had to give her graphic details of her suicide attempts, rages, and that it damaged her pancreas and now she is insulin dependent. Finally she agreed with me and said, she is barred for life.
Can you imagine how many unsuspecting people would have been horribly damaged by this. My daughter says,well if someone is dying, they will be glad to get my blood.
At the same time, I had to go to talk to the volunteers, a man that has lyme disease was on a cot donating.

This is just another example of how horrible it all is that docs are not educated/aware of Lyme disease, leaving so many undiagnosed. Not only leaving patients to suffer; but also the risk of spreading the disease.
I was sick for 3 years. Though I knew something was terribly wrong, docs said everything looked okay - the usual Lyme story. I tried to be good about donating blood since my father-in-law died of Leukemia. After several donations, I later (finally) find out I have TBD's, including Babesia Ducani. I feel terrible that I had donated blood, trying to be helpful - but unknowingly may have infected others. I still feel awful about it. Will the medical community ever wake up? TS

The other day at a function the Blood Mobile was there and of course trying to get people to donate. I told them I could not since I had Lyme and Babesia. They point blank told me that if it had been 3 years since I was had Lyme I was "OK" to donate now. Only have to wait 3 years. Babesia she was not sure of, would have to have one of the Tech's look it up in their book.
I was taken aback, especially when I said I am still be treated etc. They said...well our policy is after 3 years you can donate!
