So I just started on Mepron and Zith for Babs. After about 7 days I began to get little itchy patches all over, but mostly on my arms, chest and back. I went off both meds for 2 days to see if it had any effect. It didn't so I went back on for a day and the rash got worse.

I emailed my LLMD about it and he told me to go off all meds until it clears up. Annoyingly he didn't elaborate on what's causing it, if it's normal for people on this treatment or how long to expect it to last. What can you folks tell me?

It's annoying to be sure, but it's not horrible... at least not yet. Has anyone else had this while on Mepron? I was on Zith for a couple of months and had no problems, it must be the Mepron. What was your experience?

Thanks!
CT

I have never heard of that symptom on Mepron. I would say trust your intuition as to whether it feels like something that will only get worse, or something that might get better once you adjust.

But like I said, I dunno. There are artificial sweeteners and dyes in Mepron (haha obviously) so maybe you have a sensitivity to either of those "inactive" ingredients...but I would think if you did have a sensitivity to the saccahrin (i think that is what it's sweetened with) or to yellow dye you would have known from prior experiences in life. Maybe not though.

Also, is the Diflucan absolutely necessary? Because I get the impression Diflucan is hard on the liver/body for some people. So maybe that additional drug is putting you over the edge. Maybe after the rash clears you could try Mepron again without Diflucan, and see if relieving that burden allows your body to better tolerate the Mepron?

I take Nystatin for yeast, and that is helping okay.

Often, with just about any medication, the rash thing is an allergic reaction.

Work with your LLMD on this one.

Thanks for the responses.

I searched around on this site and noticed several posts that related a rash to Mepron. So it seems I'm not alone in this.

I have another email in to my LLMD about what he thinks the suspected cause is -- drug, allergy, etc. I'll let you know what he says.

It's too bad because since I started the Mepron I've been feeling a little better. I expected to feel an increase in fatigue, but I got just the opposite. I've been feeling a lot more energy; almost a weird kind of over stimulation. Almost as if I drank a six pack of Red Bull.

Not exactly the way I want to feel, but I sure did get a lot of stuff done today [woohoo]

Thanks.

Just to wrap this up... here's what my LLMD's Physicians Assistant said in response to my question about whether my rash was an allergy or a response to treatment.

quote:
We do not know that. You will have to monitor that over time. If the rash returns but is mild and intermittent it may be a response to treatment. If the rash worsens and/or you develop other symptoms such as difficulty breathing we would suspect an allergy and stop the Mepron.
Basically, she has no idea. I guess I'm gonna go back on the Mepron and see what happens.

I think I'm going to change my screen name to Chronic Guinea Pig.
