Dr. J discontinued my dd's tx on 11/05, her symptoms are resolved- yay.
But now she has excessive gas, burping every 30 seconds and flatulence. She was sent home from school yesterday and she's very uncomfortable. The regular pediatrician says it's probably a stomach virus that her body is addressing.
I don't see how this is not connected to coming off of 20 months of abx and antimalarials (zith/mepron). She hates yogurt and acidophilus. I gave her a powder powerful acidophilus just before all this burping started.
Could this be a bacterial war in her gut? What suggestions do you have and please remember- this is a child who has a hard time getting down strange foods/pills.

It sounds like disruption of the gut flora from the long-term antibiotics. Many of the unfriendly things that grow in our gut ferment food into gases (producing bloating, flatulence, burping), whereas our friendly bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids that are healthful for us.
There is a very high quality, non-dairy probiotic drink called GoodBelly that is available at all Whole Foods markets and some health food stores. It has L. Plantarum 299v which has been shown in studies to relieve symptoms of IBS including bloating, gas, etc. It also colonizes the GI tract effectively to crowd out pathogens. It is a yummy fruit juice basically and should agree with most children's taste.
