Help. I am due to go out of town for my first long trip since getting really sick in '05.

Now I'm feeling very sick - mostly GI-related - and getting apprehensive about traveling alone.

Any tips would be appreciated.

The quick background: Have just finished 9 days of watery diarrhea and though things are better, they are not normal.

I did 4 days of a liquid diet, and have slowly added solid food back to the diet.

Have seen some improvement since starting oral vancomycin, but still having a lot of abdominal pain that extends down my legs.

And I feel so drained, and, well, sick.

LLMD has been concerned about C. Diff, and also I have a history of multiple bacterial and amoebic overgrowths (dysbiosis) so put me right back on vancomycin, plus upping the probiotics, s. boulardii and garlic that I normally do.

I think I'll be covered for c. diff etc while out of town, but am still worried about just getting there.

Can any of you think of any more preventitive measures, or good tips for getting through this?

Canceling is not an appealing option, obviously.

Thanks for any ideas, tips, suggestions,
Cactus

Take New Chapter's SuperCritical Omega 7. Try taking 2 about 20 minutes before a meal. Rebuilds the lining of the GI tract. Fast acting and provides quick relief.

Most Vitamin Shoppe's stock it. You can also get it online. Best $20 I ever spent...

BTW - leg cramping could indicate dehydration. You need potassium and electrolytes asap...

Thanks, Julie.

I will go to the health food store this afternoon.

And thanks for the tip about the leg cramping!

Wow, I've been trying so hard to stay hydrated, but have no doubt that I'm low on potassium and electrolytes.

Will pick up something at the health food store for that, too.

Hi Cactus,

For help with leg cramps, I always carrry Hyland's Leg Cramps with Quinine homeopathic tablets in my purse, especially when I travel. It's always hard for me to drink enough water when I travel, and I get easily dehydrated.

Hyland's has one leg cramp formula that dissolves under the tongue, and also one that's in caplet form that you take with water. The dissolving one works faster. Contains quinine and mag phos cell salt, among other homeopathic remedies.

I also take mag phos homeopathic cell salts to help with muscle cramping. I should try the potassium one too, and see how well that works.

Have a good trip,
Nutmeg

Thanks, Nutmeg - that's a great idea. I love Hyland's, too.

Cactus,

C-dif is very contagious through touch of items. My godmother is currently in an isolated nursing room with C. dif. So you are at risk of exposing other people to this problem.

Can you put off your travels?

Thanks, hiker. After I read your note, I called LLMD this morning -

And she has given me the okay to travel, given that I am on vanco and seem to be symptom-free now.

That is a relief not only for traveling but also for my family - I would not have wanted to share this bug with my preschool age child.

Editing to add that we are not sure whether it is actually c. diff or if it could be bacterial dysbiosis acting up again - I have been treated twice for that in the past, with vanco both times.
