I have a terrible time getting to sleep!!

I have taken Ambien for quite some time.... Suffice it to say, this is not good. But I don't think now is the time to address that issue, given that I just began treatment for Lyme... I plan to ween off the Ambien at a later time.

What does everyone do to get to sleep? I read books, take Ambien. Any other suggestions? So frustrating!

Nothing works for me except drugs, I hate to say.

I take Ambien, trazodone, and melatonin. I get good sleep that way.

...sigh...

Supplements:

1.GABA

2.Melatonin - 3mg timed-release by Source Naturals

3.Mg citrate/other (400mg) PLUS B complex vitamin

4.Listen to a CD titled: "Sleep Deeply".

...Some ideas to consider.

I took Ambien and it only worked for about 3 weeks. Now i take Lunesta and it works great, althogh I wish they had an extended release one, because I wake up at 4 am sometimes and can't go back to sleep. Been taking it for a couple of years and it still works.

Sleep is the one thing I might be improving on. I take 100 mg of Lyrica 2 hours before bed and 18mg melatonin. The lyrica helps me fall asleep, melatonin helps me stay asleep.

Go to bed at the same time every night, early is better than later and stop thinking about it.

B-complex by day (to feed and strengthen nerves) will help nevers be able to settle down and rest at night . B-6 or P5P before bed are calming.

Liver support, too, is vital for good sleep.

I can't sleep either. I am up until at least 3am. Then up again at 6:30 to get my son off to school. Then I try to sleep some in the morning but my other son is home on medical leave so his tutor comes after lunch.

Anyways, I am afraid to take sleeping pills because I am sensitive to meds. My luck I wouldn't wake to take my son to school.

Does anyone know of a sleeping pill that is very mild and not habit forming?

Also what about children? My 10 yr old with Lyme (the one who is on medical leave from school) can't sleep either. He goes to bed at 10pm. It takes him a long time to fall asleep. He wakes at 1:30am every night.

Then last night we was up all night. Sweating, itchy, crying, stomach aches & hungry. I think he was herxing?

He takes all his herbs before bed for detoxing. Maybe they are keeping him up? I might try to do those during the day.

But does anyone know if there are safe sleeping pills for kids?

Thanks!

Find the ODA (optimal dietary allowance, not RDA...recommended dietary allowance) of Mg and B complex for children that age.

He can safely take the above about one hour before bedtime.

I personally feel it is safer than phenobarbital.

Study up on the mechanism of action:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbiturate

Keep the following in mind:

Frontline, to PREVENT lyme in dogs works by blocking GABA A and GABA C (chloride) channels. These = fast inhibition. Frontline does NOT impact GABA B which is not a chloride channel and which causes SLOW inhibition.

GABA comes from glutamate (= glutamic acid). Bb is metabolizing glutamate (and alanine)...so we gotta keep making more.

Glutamate and GABA are considered the "workhorses" of the brain. Glutamate is the "accelerator" and then GABA is the "brakes".

These are not the only neurotransmitters impacted by lyme (I wish they were!)...
