Is it just Me or is this flu thing getting way more TV coverage than is currently justified?
Yes, it can spread, but so has the Lyme epidemic. I mean, 1 death in the U.S. so far (acc. to tonight's news 4/29/09)- an infant in Texas, and a handful of confirmed cases in a few states... is not a major health disaster.

It is of concern, Yes, but how about all the tens of thousands of people STRUGGling with Lyme, and many more than that "dealing" with it's issues on a Daily Basis... Where are OUR 5-8 minutes leading off EVERY MAJOR NETWORK NEWS CHANNEL?? (I timed it.)

Why isn't that CDC spokesman talking about an about-to-arrive seasonal peak if new LYME infections... likely to set records Again??
Where's OUR [safe] vaccine??

You'd think it was 1918 all over again... which it ISN'T! This flu "pandemic" has been O-V-E-R-B-L-O-W-N (in my humble opinion). Massachussetts lost +30% of it's total Population to the 1918-1920 epidemic, in some cities! Now THAT is a pandemic.

I hope we can soon get as much attention as this "swine flu". Maybe we need a catchier name.
Any ideas?

I just wrote my county supervisors today on just this subject. They are wasting tax payer money setting up a Swine Flu command center while the Lyme disease epidemic silently rages on.

Again, a whole 5 minutes tonight [Thurs 4/30] on all 3 major [Boston] TV networks... Swine Flu! Even NH Gov. Lynch got in with a 15-30 second spot about a couple suspected Concord hospital cases.
Still, I haven't heard a peep from Any of our NH Statehouse folk- on local TV, radio OR newspaper- about the Proclamation signing that about 18 of us showed up for, up in Concord NH last week.
(It announces May as Lyme Awareness Month here in the Granite State.)
Guess we might need to wait until May? {sigh}

And that death was a Mexican child brought to the United States a few days prior to it's passing.

So far no Americans have died or any citizens from any other country except Mexico.

Yes, I think it is being over blown and as usual
we are being blown over.

Looks like Oprah has blown us off. I guess we really have to hope the review of the IDSA guidelines produce something in our favor.

If not, people could just go see the movie Lymelife and laugh about our illness and remain clueless.

I know what you mean. Chances are it's NOT going to kill you and your body will get over it. With Lyme, your body may not EVER get over it, even with antibiotics and it messes you up mentally, physically, spiritually. The whole media stuff is really irking me today!

The one person that caught it here in the Houston area recovered as most everybody does from a bout of flu...but in the meantime they closed down a whole freakin' high school over it.

Talk about no concept of priorities....

I think closing a school or 3 will only delay spread of a new communicable virus in the general population by a week or 2 in any given area.
Close Closing Airports would be a lot better way to get a handle on things. But that will NEVER happen. Too much $$ involved/ potential economic loss too high.

I can't help but wonder how many people here in the Northeast will come down with early-Lyme flu-like symptoms, fret that its "swine flu", go home & rest/ "recover" (never calling or seeing a doc) only to find much later that they unknowingly past thru the easily cured early stage & are now suffering from disseminated Lyme. [shake]

I haven't totally given up on Oprah "until the fat lady sings" (our 'contact', that is. [Wink] )
Maybe they'll be running a bit low on TV show ideas in a month & say, what the heck, let's invite a few Lyme "experts" over & do this.

I'm just glad to hear on this board that 'N.H. Chronicle' is getting a new show together on Lyme that will air soon on NH's Channel 9, WMUR-TV. [woohoo]
