Yes, Milk Thistle can make some medicines less effective. AND it can also help protect your liver from some other medicines.

[Editing to clarify: It's all about timing. Usually fine when timed hours apart.]

Best to ask your LLMD or LL ND. If Milk Thistle is not desired (say, as with mepron) . . . there are other ways to help protect the liver. NAC is just one of those.

MILK THISTLE SEED (Silybum marianum)

WHAT IT DOES: Milk thistle seed is sweet in taste and cooling in action. It strongly protects, repairs and nourishes the liver, stomach and intestines.

SAFETY ISSUES: Milk thistle may speed clearance of pharmaceutical drugs. Use cautiously (consult your physician) if taking specific drugs which require adequate blood levels, such as cardiac glycosides or cyclosporine.

- Be sure to read this entire chapter - very interesting.

Isn't it ok as long as we take it hours away from the medication?

canefan,

thanks for the call for clarification.

Yes, indeed, timing is everything. Just don't take at the same time - but always discuss with LLMD or LL ND regarding specifics.

It's vital to always have some kind of liver support always on board. Always. There are many options, only some of which are listed above.

Razzle,

Yes, I love andrographis, too, as it can cover many bases. In addition to a nice liver support, it's also an adrenal support - and helpful against malaria (so maybe babesia, too?) - helps against fungal matters.

However, not everyone can tolerate it. For those who can, though, it's marvelous though sedating.

If it does not work for you, back away. Not everything works for everyone so don't try to fight that. For myself, it's the best anti-seizure help ever. However, for another poster here, the opposite experience.

I take all supplements three hours away from any abx. I do use milk thistle and in 5 months on IV and orals, my blood work is excellent.

Oh great! I've been giving my son milk thistle with his meds (zithromax and mepron) in the morning before school. Should I be worried..I've been doing it for months! [Frown]

amk33,

I always feel there is no point in worrying about the past. Just change when we get new information.

But, my guess is that (since in the morning) breakfast also went with the Rx and the milk thistle. Food would make it all absorb more slowly so you'd not get any rush of the liver as if both milk thistle and the Rx were on an empty stomach.

GENERALLY, keep each group separate from each other by 2-3 hours:

Rx

Supplements (whether herbal or nutritional: vitamins & minerals)

Probiotics

------------

However, SOME can be mixed and matched quite well - just first clear any piggy-back combinations with LL doctor. Where food can tag along, it can help slow the process - sometimes very helpful.

I take a liver supplement called Resbid with my Mepron and zithro. My LLMD has had great results with it. It can be taken with abx, unlike other herbal supplements.

It might be an option for those who have trouble spacing out abx, probiotics, vitamins & herbal supplements (such as with kids in school, work, etc).

As mentioned by Keebler they should be spaced a few hrs apart, which gets difficult when you have to take 2 doses of each per day... some with food, some without, etc...

Thanks keebler and FamilyFive. Yes, he took it with breakfast, so that's good. I will switch it to after school, a couple of hrs before his second dose of meds. Yes, it's very hard to space everything out!

Milk Thistle needs to be 2 or 3 times a day, though. Not just once.

He may need to take some supplements to school. Hopefully, they can just go with him in a tiny container and he can keep them himself until time to take them. Not sure how old he is or the rules of the school regarding vitamins (if not actual Rx).

Good luck.
