It's fungal. Try putting grapefruit seed extract on a toothbrush and brushing his tongue well and teeth, use a tongue scraper, rinse really well with a solution of grapefruit seed extract and water.
Then open a few probiotic caps on his tongue and dissolve. Repeat for a few days and stay on a strict yeast free diet. He may need an anti fungal medication if the it doesn't work.
Also a few drops of oil of oregano under the tongue and swish it around thru out the day.

the tongue scraper is at Walgreen in the section toothpaste and normally near the dental floss. It is just a long thing in a plasic wrap.

Try putting a tablespoon of table salt on the tongue, rub it around well, let sit for a minute, spit out and rinse. Should kill the fungus. Next day scrape tongue, it should be gone.

Black tongue can be caused by a fungal infection, but it also happens after accidentally taking a pepto bismol (or rolaids or tums) too close to consuming alcohol. Did your husband have both of those substances today, by any chance?

No, he doesn't drink or take any of those things.
He tried a grapefruit seed extract/water rinse tonight. We had to guess on the number of drops. I used 10 drops per tablespoon of water. But I don't think he swished for long enough.
We'll try the salt thing too.

Did he put the grapefruit seed extract on his toothbrush and brush his tongue and teeth? It may take several tries to get rid of it. Ten drops in the rinse is a good number. There's no correct amount really.
If that doesn't work go to Dr. B's guidelines Page 34 "Managing Yeast Overgrowth" and then "Oral Hygiene" and read about "Dakin's Solution" and try that. Also read his entire section about managing yeast.
But you definitely have to brush the black stuff away and it usually won't disappear the first time.
Tea tree oil will work too, but your have to be very careful not to swallow it . It could be seriously dangerous. And you must be sure to replace everything you have killed with probiotics repeatedly to restore the natural flora no matter what method you use.

I just wanted to warn everyone that 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract per tablespoon of water was way too much for my husband. It didn't hurt at first, but now he has sores everywhere in his mouth. :-(
I wish the instructions said something about oral rinse. I followed the instructions for skin rinse.

Yes ten drops per tablespoon would be way too much. Where did you read that. I thought you were referring to a glass full of water per ten drops.
Did it help remove the fungus on his tongue?
He could gargle with warm salt water to heal the sores.
