You can also start out with small doses of the flagyl and see what happens. Some begin with a SLIVER of a flagyl tablet.

I'm on Alinia. Some LLMDs think it probably works as a cyst-buster and also on Babesia, but it's not as definite as Flagyl or Tindamax (Tinidazole).

Sorry, 'quite cheaply' is a very relative term. Flagyl is $4/month at WalMart and the alinia is something like $1500/month in brand formulation or $75-140 from India, which still isn't as cheap as Flagyl.
It's also not completely proven for Lyme and coinfections and so forth, I think we're all kind of experimenting with it for tick borne disease whereas Flagyl is more of a known issue.

First of all, take the brand name Flagyl, not the generic. I learned this from another lyme forum, and it really made a difference for me.
Also, I started out very slow with an 1/8 tablet twice weekly. Now I'm on 1/4 every other day. It took me over a month to do this.
Also, a poster on this site suggested take SameE. I take that with acetyl l carnitine per Dr. K. Singleton's Lyme Solution book. It helps these strong medications clear the liver faster. It does help. I'm amazed. I started at 1 tablet each (200mgSameE and 1 acetyl l carnitine) in the morning on an empty stomach 45 minutes before breakfast. It helps you up the dose of Flagyl. Now I take the second dose in the afternoon of these two. I take my Flagyl with food at breakfast.
Hope this is helpful for you.

I refused to take Flagyl or Tinidazole after reading that they cause cancer in rats.

I don't know Lyme is deadly too like cancer. I know others with cancer that have a much better quality of life than many with Lyme.
