I've been reading up on digestive enzymes recently and and noticed this comment on one of the websites I was on, "if given too much (protease), can digest mucous membranes in the gut".

Can we get too much protease in our digestive enzymes to the point that it could literally eat (or damage) our guts?

Curious about this.

Gary

Yeah sure you can, especially if you take plant enzymes that are active in the low pH of the stomach (as opposed to pancreatin-based pancreatic enzymes which don't get going until they pass the stomach).

I gave myself an ulcer this way (or possibly aggravated a mild one that had been flying under the radar).

These enzymes digest protein. If you opened a capsule and dumped the powder in your mouth for long enough, you would develop severe irritation, as it began to digest your tongue / mouth lining.

Do you have any recommendations on what would be some good (and safe) digestive enzymes to take?
