I just got a port put in October 22nd. The nurse drew blood back from my port and said it looked strange. They looked at it under the microscope and they think I have an infection from my port. They should have results tomorrow.

If I have an infection is it possible to be treated with abx or do they have to pull the port?

If I can hear from someone that had an infection with a PICC or port. What abx do they use? We are already on so many abx.

Any comments appreciated. Trying no to freak out. I love my port.

Thanks,

Haley

I have heard of people with Picc lines who get treated if they get an infection without pulling the line.
I also have seen people who have to pull the line and also get treated for the infection.

I have not heard or seen anyone yet who has a port that this infected.. i assume they will try to treat the infection without pulling the port which is not as easy as pulling a picc line.

And I assume it also depends on the infection type and severity..

I have a port and never had a problems with infection so I can not talk from experience.

I hope that it comes back negative... !

I am an oncology nurse and know that if we have a

patient that has an infected port, it usually is

removed.

I hope that is not the case for you!

Be well.

Hopeful,

I hope that you don't have to have the port removed---but, if you do, that's better than a life-threatening infection! Let us know what happens.
