Met with my PCP yesterday. I described the neurological symptoms I get if I go off doxy:
brain fog anger/irritability memory loss cognitive loss aphasia severe fatigue
He didn't believe these symptoms were caused by an active bacterial infection, that any bacteria I may have picked up along the way would be long gone after 4 months of doxy.
Instead, he suggested that it was the anti-inflammatory properties of doxy that was relieving these issues. CFS was raised as a possibility for the muscle/joint issues, and an anti-depressant for the neurological issues.
My jaw dropped. I've heard of anti-imflammatory effects of antibiotics - specifically doxycycline - but I'm stumped how that could be causing those neuro symptoms to go away - unless we're talking encephalitis. I don't think my brain is swelling and shrinking within a few days of taking/stopping doxy.
Has anyone else ever heard of this effect?
Thanks!

Well that's great, but why don't "other" anti-inflammatory drugs stop the suffering? That's what I told my doctor. He looked at me like I was a retard. Even steroids don't stop it for most of us, yet the moment a cycline drug helps alleviate some of our symptoms, it's anti-inflammatory properties that get the credit?
Another interesting thing is that usually people have Herxheimer reactions about one week to two weeks on the cycline drugs. An anti-inflammatory drug doesn't do that.
A Brain SPECT scan may be in order.

I'm still at a loss with the basic idea of ANY anti-inflammatory agent warding off all those neuro symptoms outside of the swollen brain. Somehow I doubt the brain swells and shrinks that fast in reaction to some doxy.

The medical community has made up so many excuses regarding the effects of antibiotics on Lyme Disease patients.
They deny the bacterium persists in-spite of adequate antibiotics, yet I have more than one hundred studies demonstrating otherwise. They still deny it. It's senseless and purely irrational.
