Paul, What do you want to filter?? Every thing different requires different methods.
The best is probably a reverse osmosis system!!
Or do you just have dirt and grit to filter Price the filters your going to need before installing that system,,what ever you do.

Scott has a whole section on his site that refers to good water filters.
I would save the $$ on a whole house water filter and just get one for your sink faucet (to drink) and one for your shower faucet (so you dont get contaminated when you shower)
This can be accomplished for about 150$ vs. a whole house system which is about 500$ to start.

I just want all the water that comes into my house to be as clean as possible
So when i take a jacuzzi i'm not floating in a bunch of chemicals
I do have a shower filter and a alkaline water system. Both are top of the line
One problem is when i look at whole house filters some are like 800 bucks all the way to 5 grand- i dont mind paying a decent amount of money. but i want to make sure i get a good one
Maybe I will look into reverse osmosis system- dont much much about them- but i can learn
