Son (17) went to Family Dr and he gave script for doxy (hyclate) 100mg 2xday. (acne) I know its low dose but figured its a start.

He started Sunday and Mon. am took pill before he ate and got sick on way to school (vomited) so I started making sure he ate FIRST.

Stomach upset but he told me yesterday diarrhea started, severe stomach ache, headache and last night he saw kinda a red light (i think) and maybe dizzy.

I told him not to take doxy today and gave him imodium, sent him to school and said I thought he'de be ok today but if he got worse to call me. Its 1pm and he hasn't called.

I told him it could probably either be a reaction to meds and/or herx because its hitting the lyme.

PLEASE, as its my son, I am obviously scared and concerned that I might not be doing the right thing. Please does this sound on track to ya'll??

I figured we'de try to cut back to perhaps 1 pill a day for awhile and I could start him on a probiotic and perhaps fish oil?

Thank you for any input you might have.

I am also confused about which test to test for and I will be posting another thread concerning that

Bless ALL of you,

Karen (:

P.S. My son didnt even tell me about this until this morning because he didnt want to worry me but when he still had diarrhea this morning he was scared.

He said he had cheese on burger at school yesterday. I know no dairy within 2 hrs but does that mean NO dairy AT ALL during the day????

I would have him avoid dairy for awhile. Probably throughout treatment.

Have him take doxy after a meal maybe to ease the stomach pain.

Take a probiotic in the middle of the day and before bed time. Away from the abx's.

I take my probiotics on empty stomach at 3pm and at midnight.

Probiotics are a must! Take them away from antibiotics; and Doxy needs to be taken with a large meal, but no diary with doxy, within 2 to 3 hours.

Upset stomach is a side effect of many antibiotics.

I also had a lot of trouble when starting on Doxy. Same dose your son was given.

Thanks to the help of this board, I found out NOT to take Doxy at bedtime. It's best to take right AFTER you eat breakfast and right AFTER you eat dinner. Don't take on an empty stomach.

If you take it late in the evening it can cause heartburn. (It did for me).

I agree with the above and avoid dairy right now. Also consider a gluten free diet. It's not as hard to do as most people think.

Also as stated above, definitely take a good probiotic.

The thing though that I found helped me most with Doxy is about an hour after I took it, I'd have my 2nd cup of green tea and take a ginger root capsule and eat some pretzels.

Ginger root can be very very helpful with an upset stomach.

I send probiotics with my son (9) to take at lunch so its spaced out enough in between abx.

Its tough to deal with when adults have it, but its heartbreaking to watch kids suffer with it.

He can try a pinch of salt for the nausea and vomiting. It stopped mine.

I could not take it without food of somekind.

And he most likely would benefit from something to prevent yeast
I take (Nystatin) and a probiotic (Creon), to keep bowels in check.

I had a lot of troubles with vomiting on doxy also. I had to eat a carb with it. Like a bread of some sort. Usually wheat and it had to be enough food or I would vomit. No dairy before taking the doxy.

Yes starting with 1 per day is probably good. You have to work your way up slowly.

Also the probiotics are a must!!

If he is herxing he may need a little time off of school. I have 2 boys with lyme and my one son was so sick that he had to be tutored at home for a few months [Frown]
