It sounds like a lot of us newbies have at one time or another been prescribed insufficient amounts of Doxy. I understand this won't help us much in our battle against Bb, but can it hurt us at all?
I guess I'm thinking along the lines of the bacteria becoming resistant to it and not responding to subsequent stronger courses. Or of the low dose of doxy "stirring up the pot" so to speak, getting the bacteria all aggravated and flaring-up.
I don't know if that made any sense...it did in my head.

I totally get what you are saying. I have thought of this many times as well. I was never on doxy but sometimes I think if maybe I am under treating and if one day I do get higher doses, will the abx still work or will the bacteria be resistant.
I have no clue. I hope someone can answer

Understandable concern, and yes there are hoards & legions of Americans who've been radically under-treated for Lyme disease & co-infections with a pittance of doxy. I among them...
From my research, i think:
- It was NOT useful.
- It wasn't particularly harmful years after the fact for a chronic LD sufferer,
- BUT, the BIG problem with too low-dose doxy on new, acute cases of Lyme disease (like in a child from a region where he/she may not have been born infected) is that those acute cases will instantly become chronic Lyme disease because the window of opportunity was missed by under-treating.
That is the great tragedy. And THAT is how the IDSA guideliners, the CDC, big pharma and American insurers have created & spread the plague that is LD. Only 100 mg doxy 2x/day for a couple weeks upon your first infection seals your fate to suffer greatly and hope only for remission after ILADS proven CURE IGNORED.
- An important, well-written, (and to me, dramatic) article explaining in clear and vivid detail how & why antibiotic therapy is important to battle the spirochetes is by R.A.S. of ILADS:
I think this article is well-worth re-reading and having a copy or two at the ready to share with someone genuinely wishing to understand the horrors of Lyme. It ain't your average bacteria, and wasn't actually even classified as a bacteria for (many wise) years.
- Rest assured that "bacterial resistance" is a horrible trend of concern, but NOT in terms of the Lyme Bb. It's a spirochete, SO unlike all the common bacteria most are more familiar with. LBb is a potent, stealth, even "intelligent" invader of body systems. (I'd imagine if the 'ketes could talk they might say, "100 mg doxy? I laugh at you!")
Bacterial resistance IS a huge concern worldwide due to the over-prescription of antibiotics for non-life-threatening, self-limiting illnesses in humans, pets, and livestock. Lyme disease doesn't fit in that box.
Bacterial resistance is a HUGE problem for biodiversity. Amphibians (like canaries in a coal mine) are been deformed and killed due to the abundance of pharmacueticals and anti-bacterial soaps going down the drains in the "civilized," "developed" nations worldwide. Anything you flush or pour down a drain can eventually get into the skin of an amphibian and deform or kill it. We are wiping out an entire class of animals!
Where do we go from here?
* Buy organic whenever possible. * Buy local whenever possible. * NEVER buy anti-bacterial soaps. They only harm the environment. Any basic soap will get you clean. * Listen to your LLMD, and * Remain optimistic!

I often wondered about this doxy resistance myself, as my 1st month of 'treatment' by my PCP for CDC+, confirmed late-Lyme was just That... 100mg of doxy twice a day. InITIally quite the herxes!
When I went to see a LLMD at the inSistence of my older cousin (who's brother & friend have both battled Lyme), he switched me to Ceftin.
About 3 months later I was put back on doxy at 200mg twice a day, but only made a small amount of progress over 3 months.
I really believe the bugs that survived the initial "bacteriostatic" dosing (many!) were "prepared" for the 'cycline' when I started back up on it.
Thank GOD they hadn't ever "seen" the amoxy, or ANY penicillun, that i BASHED 'em with after that dissappointing (full-dose) doxy regiment. THAT saved me from "going I.V."

I too have wondered the same thing. Even my LLMD put me on doxy 200 mg/day. I'm really confused as to why he did this.
Now I'm on amoxy the full dose suggested by Dr. B. but can't the probenecid so who knows...

I have only had treatment of 100mg of Doxy. 2x day for 4 weeks. I guess the Dr. that dx. me thinks I am cured. She told me to see an ID Dr. if I didn't feel better after I was finished with the Doxy.
I began researching Late Stage Lyme as soon as I was dx. (June 1, 2010). I have finished the Doxy. I have yet to find a Dr. to further help me (let alone return my phone calls).
Good luck to you.

Don't expect (most) any I.D. docs to cure the mystery, Consuela. You need to keep lQQking for that Lyme-knowledgable doc who can keep you on abx until Lyme symptoms clear, & then atleast 4 weeks beyond. Check around your state(?) to see if there's a local Lyme support group who can help guide you.
