What is the best kind to take? I just take a small amount in a multi right now.

I buy chelated magnesium from Solgar. I read somewhere that your body absorbs them better.
I would think that a liquid form would be good also.

It probably depends on why you want to take it. To support general health, decrease muscle spasms, or prevent tendon problems with Levaquin try one of the more absorbable forms like Mag Malate or Mag Glycinate. To help with constipation try Mag Oxide.
Dosing is very individual. Start with one capsule or tablet and work you way up as tolerated (take it daily in divided doses). When you start to have loose stools reduce your dose by one or two tablets and continue at that dose.
