I wrote this message is for Char, who is looking for a counselor for her daughter. But I accidentally posted it as a new post, and then decided that the info would probably be helpful to a lot of readers. So kindly overlook the personal part that is out of context as a new post:
My doc INSISTED I read Eric Braverman's book, 'The Edge Effect'. I was less than interested, being very ill and overwhelmed with lyme-related reading, and thinking I already knew plenty about brain chemicals.
The book is about brain chemicals, but it goes beyond the usual explanations of how they cause emotional and even physical disorders when unbalanced. It's a true self-help book, loaded with questionnaires and checklists to enable individuals to assess their personality type and brain chemical patterns. Then it tells you what foods and supplements help increase the chems. you need more of.
I'm only halfway through it, but I started taking the GABA supplement recommended for my primary deficiency, and already I feel much more like myself. As far as I can tell, the remedies are pretty simple, involving a few nutritional supplements and telling you what foods help increase mood regulating hormones.
Being a former psychotherapist (now disabled), I support the idea that you want to be pretty confident of the therapist's skills before dragging your teenage kid in. Unfortunately, counselors are being manipulated by the health care system to be brief, superficial, and directive. In my experience that only worked with very low functioning (mentally challenged or mentally ill) clients.
Good luck in trying to help your daughter through this difficult time, Char.
