Today my daughter finally saw an LLMD for the first time...after multiple fruitless visits to other docs...We saw Dr. S in Howell, NJ and I must say it was a wonderfully postivie experience.

He tested her for co-infections, was supoortive, informative and very, very knowledgeable.

He put her on zithromax and acidophilus.

Now We have a dilemna though. She saw an ID doc 4 weeks ago who did a lumbar punture and the appt for the results is next week.

Im not sure what to do if this doc actually feels she needs treatment...can you have an LLMD and an ID doc on the same case??

Our PMD is useless, he thinks she just has depresisson...(somehow the logic of that escapes me, since depression can't produce a positive WB, fevers, low platelets, etc) but what do I know..hmmm...

Seriously, Im worried about how to handle the 2 doc issue...mostly because if she needs certain treatments, like IV abx, the LLMD is out of network, but the ID doc is in network...

and I cant afford, no way, no how, to pay out of pocket for something that big and wait to maybe get reimbursed. Am I nuts to even worry aboutn this??

Elle

Why don't you ask you ID doctor to work with your LLMD? My LLMD that im sceduled to see doesn't even take insurance and hes going to work with a doctor at my student health care center at university i attend.

It does make sense to ask the two doctors to work together...and I will ask.

I hesitate a bit because in the long process of getting her diagnosed and finally treated, my trust level in doctors has gone down. My father was a doctor and I used to have a sort of awed reverence for the profession.

This experience has, however, really knocked the scales from my eyes and I guess Im just a little crispy about even making a reasonable request of an ID doc when the subject is Lyme disease...

elle, you HAVE to be concerned about $$$; many folks here have LOST EVERYTHING due to out of pocket expenses for treatments, traveling out of state, LOST JOBS, HOMES, bankrupt.

i agree about seeing if the 2 docs can work together. please private message your IF MD's name; i'll check to see if i've heard of him or not.

WE DO HAVE SOME GOOD IF MDS WHO ARE LYME LITERATE!! FEW AND FAR BETWEEN!

if your llmd thinks the procedure would be good for your child, go with it ... would be covered in network!

then if you need NON-MEDICAL advise, come here and we'll share our experiences, thoughts, with you. many RNs here. good luck! [group hug] [kiss]

I would see if they can work together- may not work- but always worth a try-!!

My advice only,,,go to the ID doc cautiously(most of them are NOT lyme friendly,,,hope yours IS)

See what he says first,,, If he is friendly, suggest working together,,sounds like the best plan.

BUT If the appointment goes south,,he says all in her head,,,must be something else, see a phsycology(sp) people, its all in her head, results dont show, etc. drop him like a hot brick and forget him,go with LLMD alone.

In other words let his action govern IF you ask the big question. IF you ask before you determine EXACTLY where he stands, your backed to the wall

IF you try to educate him OR change his views, its like getting a horse to drink!! the opinion of --just don--

I would go and get the results and play it by ear. Having them work together is the best idea but may not happen.

I had already seen my LLMD by the time my insurance decided my positive Elisa could merit a discussion with an ID. He didn't want to see my Igenex results or hear about what my LLMD said.

I said that I really believe what the LLMD said but I wanted to know what he suggested. I had already been to every specialist known to man. He sent me to yet another neuro and amazingly she listened (only my 10th specialist) and is working with my LLMD so I am no longer paying out of pocket for meds as I did when I started treatment.

Sorry for the long ramble but just keep trying. It may happen that you find a in-network MD that will work with your LLMD.

My spinal was negative for Lyme but my neuro said going in that it probably would be, only 5% of infected people have a positive. She used it to rule out everything else.
