My daughter's LLMD used to always use one and was advised to quit by another Dr due to possible damage to the bottom of her spine.

I have also taken my daughter to this second dr for assistance with a brain damage issue. He attempted to explain this issue with me but he wasn't sure if there was any research or articles on this problem.

Does anyone have any info?

My main concern is that our school district is starting to use these balls in some classes.

Thanks for any help. lymemomtooo

I have one.

I've never heard of anything bad about them.

My chiropractor uses one and says it's good to use.

Yes Betty. The Dr told me that some physical therapists are seeing problems with patients NOT improving from using them.

He said the body is not designed to have the cheeks, contour in that way, it puts stress on the lower spine...But he did not know if there was any research out there.

So far, I haven't seen any..thanks. lmt

I don't think I would be able to handle one of those either. Looks scary to me since I have sciatic nerve problems [lower back].

I'm too old for that kind of stuff!! [Cool]

Wish I knew the source-but heard a brief headline for a news segment saying that stability balls may do more harm then good.

The instability of stability balls is what scares me.

Here's what I found under a Consumer Report Article.

"Caution: If you have weak muscles or poor balance, or are over age 65 and not very fit, avoid the ball exercises or do them only under the supervision of a qualified professional. And consult your doctor or physical therapist before doing these exercises, particularly bridges or back extensions, if you have back problems. "

Basically I've read that before- they can be a good device-if used with a skilled professional.

wow, my PT suggested I do excercises with it, but mine arent ones where you sit on the ball. If i was still seeing her I would ask.

The excercises I do are basically where I lay on my stomach and do leg lifts to strengthen my gluttes, or stretch sideways over the ball.

lymemomtoo- what type of excercises was your daughter doing?

Can't, my daughter was not using one and I only wish she would exercise..Well I don't count her weeks of almost nothing and then a spurt of 50 sit-ups to help remedy abdominal fat as any realistic exercise.

Webby, thanks for the info and for looking. I am so overwhelmed with school board, opening the museum, working at the Welsh Cottages and getting ready for a support group meeting, plus the normal things here, that I have only been able to spend a tiny bit of time researching. [Smile]

Tutu, I am with you. I think if I tried to sit on one, my posterior would slide to the floor with a bang. lmt
