We are seeing the large, black, mega-ton type ants all around the outside of our house and garage.
I think they came with the last load of firewood as they are also seen underneath the pallets where the wood was stacked.
I would love to correct this problem before they make their way in the house. Is there a non-toxic remedy out there that is effective?
Thanks

diamacious earth (sp) maybe.
or maybe spray Tempo once a week for awhile,,or as often as you can find new bugs.
low toxic since its labeled for inside restaurants and food processing places.

or consult a termite company,,,carpenter ants are as bad as termites and powder post beetles in destroying your house invisibly

I think that diatomaceous earth spread around the outside of the house has the side effect of causing immediate bankruptcy, though.

We always used cucumber peels and put them all around. They eat it and die.
Another thing we used was that Tero Sp? from Lowe's or any dept. store. Placed them around away from pets and kids and this helped as well. Comes in a gel.
And next year don't stack your wood right next to your house or garage.

TS, Cucumber peels are toxic for carpenter ants?Great. We have plenty of peelings.
Randibear, I didn't realize Borax was used on the big ants.
Do they eat it?
This would be a very simple solution.
Thanks, all!

I've had good success with Terro bait traps and liquid like TS96 mentioned. Ants are lured to it, then bring stuff back to the nest to kill others.
My dog leaves it alone if it's the liquid on a their cardboard targets, but the little bait boxes may temp her to carry one off.
The cuke peels are a new one I must investigate!

Disolve some borax in water, mix it with honey, and watch them eat it.
They take it back and feed the queen,BANG she is dead.
