I often wonder how many people are homeless because of Lyme?
How many lost their jobs and could no longer work?
How many of the obviously crazy people I saw when I was younger who roamed the streets and were ignored by the rest of humanity really had Lyme?
Not all, but I bet there is a decent percentage.
How many have been totally crushed by this disease to die destitute, mentally crippled and forgotten?

I lost my career and my home to this disease. Thankfully, I am NOT homeless or stone poor. Things will be really tough for us when my husband has to retire. Won't be a good thing.

I remember a few yrs ago there was a young man who was posting at lymenet from a tent because he was homeless. Actually I'm not sure he even had a tent. I'll bet it is much bigger than we think,

My hubby and I think Bartonella in the homeless. It has more vectors.

yeah i have changed my views on the homeless. when i was a kid i just thought "go work". as ive gotten older i realize that people are there because of drug abuse due to past traumas in life. its sad. now to consider its because of infection, even more sad.

Gael...that's right. I remember him. He spent a lot of time in the woods and couldn't get anyone to treat him!! He had gone to enough libraries to do research and knew he had Lyme. ( can't remember if he ever got a test result or not .. he may have )

I feel like this could easily make a person become homeless... I had to leave my job and now I am being hit hard with bills not to mention the medical bills that will still be coming.
luckily I make some money online but it has still hurt me... but I am considering it temporary and hope to be much more productive soon

i was homeless for several years- some of it was rough, some wasn't- but the biggest issue really is/was/were the transitions, becoming homeless to no longer being homeless- the circumstances and situations that bookend the experience of being homeless were much more of a shock to the system than living with no place to call home other than where i was-
i had a traveling partner, someone who drifted the majority of his life, who i imagined over the years i would touch base with- but i was notified recently that he died- and i cried- he was in a great deal of pain- but mostly i was overwhelmed with gratitude because he saved my life-
i can't say any particular part of the process, from my first fever, to the fatigue i feel today, was more eye opening than learning to notice true compassion or anyone's attempt at it and how humbling and somehow emancipating it is to experience -- and humorous ... in its own strange way ... My mom has always been big on "homelessness is unacceptable." She had a bumper sticker that said that. So I've always had respect for homeless people.
Especially now, sure there are people who are homeless because of substance abuse but there are also homeless people (children included) because of this economy.
It never struck me about homeless people with Lyme and co-s but I get it, and it makes perfect sense. This is a "rich person's disease" right?
I never give money because you don't know their cirucmstances but I will give food. I went grocery shopping and spent $20 to get this guy at least a weeks worth of food. I think we had $60 to our name at the time, but we had a roof.
I don't know the person who wrote from a tent but I would be curious to know how they are doing, whether or not they have a home now, and whether or not they received the treatment they needed. Hmm maybe they will come back one day.

Thanks for posting that you remembered him also. I felt soooo sorry for him being alone and homeless AND sick. Sending prayers to him and all the homeless people who are struggling. I always say "There But For The Grace Of God Go I". I was almost "I" more than once.
