Lax, this is interesting. What is used in place of the banned substances. For instance, what does Quaker Oatmeal Squares use instead of brominated vegetable oil? I have been drinking, infrequently, things like Fresca thinking I want to also avoid the petroleum carmel coloring agent of cola. I had a drink at a family get together Memorial Day. What does one push for beside getting rid of these? If I write a congressperson, what can I say is the healthier alternative?

I don't think Congress would ever ban these. The food "industry" lobbyists give them far too much money. I also think that most in congress are not intelligent enough to know why this is such an assault.

We can learn more about how to avoid:

Excitotoxins; MSG; Aspartame; & "Natural" Flavors . . . .

What is the healthier alternative:

nearly any food or beverage on the earth before our great grandparents came along - before chemical warfare on our food supply.

As for beverage choices: teas of so many varieties, small amounts of a fruit juice (just the amont in one piece of fruit, of course, no more).

Getting congress on board, IMO, is not likely to happen in our country that is set up to honor and guard corporations. It's the corporations' mission to make money. They will fight tooth and nail against anyone who gets in their way.

The FDA would have to prove these additives or methods of preparation are dangerous. I doubt their intellence and honesty to even know where to start on that and the fight that would ensue would be long, expensive (and surely rigged).

They can't even do a vitamin study correctly, with the proper form of the particular vitamin or without certain additives, so it's geared to look bad because of the poor study design.

If consumers get wise and just stop buying junk, there can be a shift. That starts with EDUCATION, AWARENESS on every level.

Support local organic (or similar) farmers, ranchers, farmers' markets, etc. Support the businesses and yes, even some corporations who are doing it correctly.

Drink GREEN TEA. I wish I had known about that when I was growing up.

NUTS

Did you know there are over 80 species of edible nuts? Maybe more. One independent market near me carries 80 varieties of nuts. Who knew? Not I. But we all should have been taught such a thing, I think.

We get too stuck. We can wiggle ourselves loose. We don't need congress to tell us that is okay. We can do that ourselves - and share with others.

About carbonated drinks, even just fizzy or sparking water:

Carbonation can be very damaging to the lining of our entire GI tract, very caustic. Not good for anyone but, particularly, those with any illness of condition that causes "leaky gut" as does lyme.

This makes me disappointed as I would like to be able to enjoy fizzy fruit waters. But it's just so dangerous - and my stomach knows there is no safe amount for me to swallow.

So, I've grown to enjoy lots of different teas in the way my stomach can enjoy

JASMINE, even just the jasmine pearls with no green tea (no caffiene), is very nice, indeed.

OtterJ: I have no idea what a healthy alternative is. It's so scary that our country allows us to eat poison and stay sick.

Before Lyme, I had no idea about GMO's and all the rest. So many are still ignorant to what's really going on.

Excellent description Keebler: chemical warfare.

A healthy alternative is to just not eat processed foods. There are so many delicious meals and snacks that we can prepare - using just real food.

I've not eaten anything from a box for years (not bragging just showing that it is entirely possible). Only thing from a can might be coconut milk. And Sardines and "safe" tuna (Wild Planet has BPA-free cans).

From glass jars: tomato paste (BioNaturae); Coconut oil; Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Nut & Seed oils.

That's about it. And (even if a small sampling due to budget constraints) I enjoy a fabulous array of foods and flavors, especially with garden herbs and spices.

Best snack of the day: Avocado with a little garlic powder & sea salt. A touch of Jambalaya seasoning might appreciated by some who enjoy the heat.

If taking with you (remember a spoon), put in a small glass jar, cover with a tiny bit of a good oil (and maybe a touch of lemon juice to retard the browning) and put in freezer for a little while before you leave.

Best "ice cream": Crushed banana with vanilla extract (never "flavor"), in a little glass jar, frozen - then thawed just enough for that frozen treat consistency.

Best snack "alternative" in that it keeps me from wanting continuous food snacks: GREEN & HERB TEAS (such as HIBISCUS).

JASMINE tea is especially fulfilling. Amazing, actually. Such flavor that stick with you.

Okay, my stevia is processed (SweetLeaf, Stevia Drops / Stevia Clear) and not entirely comfortable with the "natural flavors" even though they assure me they are not like most - so I'm wanting to find a pure one that is good. I will try Mountain Rose Herbs stevia offering next month.

Keebler.. Vitacost has an organic stevia product. I think it's KAL brand.

Thanks for the link, lax mom!
