looking for yet another place to live. react to most due to smartmeters, but I can opt-out. Had a couple of worse experiences in a couple homes and wondering if there was wireless there.
Could I easily tell without asking? Can I disable it? Is it a modem in the attic or is it part of the wiring?

Gonna try here with a few pieces of the puzzle missing but, by your questions, I'm guessing that you may not even have a WiFi router or use WiFi for your computer. If you did, you would likely know where the router (a little box with a tiny little antenna that is usually connected to your computer.
It is not the same thing as the modem (although some may be in the same "box" mine is not). A modem and a router do two very different things.
That is the RECEIVER so to speak for all the WiFi SIGNALS that come from various WiFi towers around cities. Those SIGNALS cover the area but there a pocket where reception might be spotty or not there.
You cannot turn off the WiFi that sends signals through the air from the towers.
Not quite the same kind of signal but similar in concept to the way radio & TV work. You can turn off your radio or TV but you cannot turn off the signals that are sent all around the community from your radio / TV station TOWERS.
If you have a cell phone you can tell if you get WiFi coverage at your home or not. If you do have a cell phone, though, you would not need a WiFi router / receiver as that's internal in cell phones.
Most people use home WiFi routers / receivers for computer or streaming "television" programs onto their TV set via computer signal.
If you do have a cell phone, though, it's best to keep that far away from you unless using it and keep it out of your bedroom. Better to use land line phones when you can.
You can turn off a WiFi router / receiver if you have on in your home. I turn off each my WiFi each night after I turn off my computer - by just turning off the power switch to the power surge strip where everything is plugged in.
I also then turn off the power surge strip to my TV in the other room (I use my WiFi only for TV streaming).
I'm about the least technical person I know. A friend's husband has set this all up for me so I can only hope my kindergarten level knowledge offers a reasonable explanation. I'd been watching your post on and off all day, hoping someone else would reply.
Hope my explanation is somewhere near accurate and helpful.
I would so love to be off-grid, myself, just for what it's worth. I wish I could think that all my apartment neighbors also might turn off at least their routers at night but I know it does not even occur to them. I've tried to sneak it into short conversations at the mailbox but it's a tricky topic to tip toe around.
Sounds like you are in a house, though, so at least your head is not likely sleeping next to 3 other computers on the other side of the walls. -

If you had bad experience using wireless, I think that the problem was that you had a low quality wireless. Recently I bought a Wireless Ethernet Bridge, and it is awesome. I have the fastest internet. I had tremendous problems till now with the internet’s speed as I have a pretty big house, but since using wireless, all the problems disappeared.
