I know we've had a few posts about traditions. The 'official' holiday season has begun in our house today with the feastday of St. Nicholas, also known as the original Santa Claus. It is custom in my heritage for the children to put their shoes out the night of Dec5. If they have been good, then their shoes will be filled with candy and treats on the morning of the 6th. If they have been bad, there will be coal in their shoes.
When my grandparents were little, St. Nicholas' Feastday was the day they got their presents...Christmas was actually presentless! They grew up in poor families so the gifts were modest but exciting none the less...a pencil box, fruit, nuts, etc. Naturally times have changed and pencil boxes have been replaced by books and DVDs, and more candy than fruit LOL! And my kids always find a small piece of coal in the toe of their shoes, just a subtle reminder that Nicholas knows they have been a little bit rowdy LOL!
So happy St. Nicholas Day everyone! cootiegirl

Happy Day Cootie.
When we garden in or back yard, the coal just comes up all the time, must have had a bad bunch living here before us!
My neighbors celebrate the ole X-mas,the Outer Banks traditional Way,with the 12 day celebration. That celebration will continue after the new year.Enjoy.
Sorry I am a day late. Happy St. Nicholas day to you.
I really wanted to read up on it. I love starting new things.
This year we did the advent wreath and next year I said i wanted to try the Hanukkah menorah.
I like to try and teach my kids that even though we celebrate one way that there are others around the world that celebrate other ways and show them some of those ways.
Happy St. Nicholas Day hope you got lots of candy in your shoes! Starr
