Lyme Disease On The Rise

With all of the natural beauty in our area

drawing people outdoors, and with warm summer

days just around the corner, Virginians need to

know how to protect themselves from exposure to

bacteria-carrying black-legged ticks, the

primary cause of Lyme disease. According to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

cases of Lyme disease in Virginia have more than

doubled in recent years. Local public health

officials have also reported increased

prevalence of ticks in our area. I want to draw

your attention to recent articles in The

Washington Post http://wolf.house.gov/uploads/Wash%20Post%20Lyme%20Article%204-8-2009.pdf and

The Winchester Star http://wolf.house.gov/uploads/winchester%20star%204-16-2009.pdf

about

the danger of Lyme and what you can do to

protect yourself from this dreaded disease.

After holding an informational forum on Lyme

disease last summer, I have become a co-chair of

the House Lyme Disease Caucus, and an original

cosponsor of the Tick-Borne Diseases,

Prevention, Education, and Research Act (H.R.

1179).

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:h.r.1179:

As a grandfather of 13, I worry that

folks in our area aren't checking young children

or even themselves for ticks after being

outdoors and encourage you to educate yourself

about the Lyme threat, which can cause fever and

fatigue, as well are more severe manifestations

such as meningitis and Bell's palsy.

I hope this information has been helpful to

you. For more on these or other issues, please

Yes, he is doing a bang up job!

Three thumbs up!

And I have to question you.... if you don't mind.... just in case I am misunderstanding the post.

I read this several times thinking the state of Virginia had a Lyme bill of some sort... due to the title of your post.

"Virginia Tick-Borne Diseases, Prevention, Education, and Research Act"

I am assuming now they don't after trying to sort through... and you are talking about the federal bill.

Did I guess right?

Or.. as usual... am I missing something?

Thanks for posting this info.

Hey Jen...

From what I can gather....

Congressman Wolf is the Congressional representative from Virginia, but I think the article you posted is talking about his support for the federal (Congressional) bill, which is HR 1179.

If you'd like to read about the federal bill ... and then you can contact your Congressional representative too to ask that they cosponsor it... please do.

Use the cheat sheet if you'd like (my name for it)... better known as the Bill Summary.

It will give you the basics so you can see what Congress and the Lyme Disease Association is doing to help folks.

There is a Lyme Disease Association web site.. beautifully done... that gives information in an easy to understand fashion... especially made for folks like me who have brain fog a lot of the time.

Here are the instructions on how to call YOUR representatives. It takes 2 minutes and actually it is kind of fun!

It gives me a little patriotic thrill to speak to Congressmen's offices. Who'd ever think they would listen to a nobody like me... but they do!

If you have questions there is an email there so you can ask them... and a FAQ page.

Here is the LDA web site...

Good luck!!

Oh... and to keep you and your sis informed...

And you might want to send the link above to everyone you know and ask them to make calls on behalf of Lyme patients...

But there is also a place you can sign up to get future Action Alerts to keep you in the "groove".

Look at the top of this page for the Click HERE to sign up for action alerts thing.

Lettuce no what your Congressman's office says too if you want.
