Does anyone know more about Senator Blumenthal's legislation and what we can do to help get this bill out of committee (what committee would it be?)

The following link is much more informative than the one you posted:
http://ctmirror.com/story/13311/blumenthal-takes-lyme-disease-fight-senate

I would also like to know: How long would it take a bill like this to pass?

I've been away for a while.

Do we have any activism on this?

I was just reading about this on mdjunction

http://www.mdjunction.com/forums/lyme-disease-support-forums/lyme-disease-activism/2923352-sen-blumenthals-needless-lyme-disease-act

Looks like it might be "needless" - would love to hear from members here.

What do you think?

momlyme - that article is completely biased and incorrect.

They say the bill is "needless" because the FDA/CDC/IDSA are already (supposedly) taking care of Lyme.

If we are happy with the "care" that the government is employing for Lyme disease, then the new legislation would be "needless".

Since the truth of the matter is that the CDC/IDSA/FDA/doctors are NOT taking care of Lyme disease, that is why this bill is very important for us.

The bill would do the job that the CDC/IDSA were supposed to be doing.

I just found the bill online:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h112-2557

Still not sure with all the government involvement if this will do any good. I guess it depends who gets on the committee!

The committee is Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The current members are:

Democrats:
T. Harkin (IA)
B. Mikulski (MD)
J. Bingaman (NM)
P. Murray (WA)
B. Sanders (VT)
R. Casey(PA)
K. Hagan (NC)
J. Merkley (OR)
A. Franken (MN)
M. Bennet (CO)
S. Whitehouse (RI)
R. Blumenthal (CT)

Republicans:
M. Enzi (WY)
L. Alexander (TN)
R. Burr (NC)
J. Isakson (GA)
R. Paul (KY)
O. Hatch (UT)
J. McCain (AZ)
P. Roberts (KS)
L. Murkowski (AK)
M. Kirk (IL)

Apparently these bills rarely make it out of committee. There is a similar House bill, H.R. 2557 by Chris Smith (R-NJ).

I'm not clear on how a bill makes it out of committee and how the public can help influence that. Anybody????

4 Seasons said..

"Does anyone know more about Senator Blumenthal's legislation and what we can do to help get this bill out of committee (what committee would it be?)"

As some know, 2 bills were introduced within a few days of each other. One is in the Senate (Blumenthal) and one in the House (Smith).

The bill numbers are... HR-2557 for the House Bill and S-1381 for the Senate bill.

The key players are still communicating and meeting right now, as time allows.

As many also know, Congress is a bit tied up right now with this ceiling thing and budget issues and are not in a real receptive mood to take on more, for that reason.

In early August Congress is suppose to go on a 3 week vacation- don't know if that will happen or not due to the budget problems.

Anyhow...

Shortly after Congress returns there should be some news from the Lyme Disease Association about actions that can be taken. I would expect them to have the LDA website updated with detailed instructions, sample blurbs and contact information for all legislators in each state by then.

I would wait for an announcement from the LDA before moving on anything to be sure all preliminary actions/meetings. etc are completed and all is good to go.

Here is the LDA press release.
