I got invited to attend a celebration today of the 35th year of accessible transit in San Francisco, a city that has been on the forefront of providing transportation access for disabled folks.
Did you know that 125 disabled folks occupied SF's federal building in 1977 to force Pres. Carter to sign the 504 regulations so that people could start to apply the ADA to transportation?
That occupation lasted about a month, in April and May 1977 and the longshoremen's union provided showers and food for everyone.
After that, the city agencies and groups started working on everything. Like they started designing bus lifts, but had to work out the kinks since the first ones were prone to dropping their passengers! Ouch.
So, I met all the movers and shakers of the past several decades - it was very moving - so much strength in people - so much perserverance.
I first encountered this situation when I could no longer climb stairs in 1999. That's when I qualified for taxi paratransit services, since I couldn't get on the buses.
It took 7 more years to find out why I couldn't climb stairs without busting my joints. It meant a lot to me to be able to finally explain what had been going on with me.
Anyone else here live in a place that has tried to make it possible for you to get around more easily as a person with physical challenges?
