Our CD-57's are 56, 76 and 99. Our ILADS doctor has a goal of getting us to 150 before ending treatment. The higher the less likelihood of relapsing. There are different thoughts on how often it should be done as maybe it isn't as good of a marker as previously thought. I think we will be retested at the 1 year point of our treatment.

My son's came back last Tuesday. He's a 10.
I did some searching on here when we got home. I wanted to see if there was anyone that low. I did find a few that reported CD57's in the single digits and one said their's was a 0.
I would be happy with a 50 something right now.

Normal is around 200. Lyme suffers are less than 100 with less than 60 being bad lyme.
You should treat until at least 150 or above.

Remember that some docs do not believe CD57 is useful for kids, the idea is that people don't really fully make these natural killer cells until age 13-15.

My CD 57 was 7. My doctor told me that means my immune system has really been damaged.

MichaelTampa - I never heard that before.
Does anyone know if Dr. J. (CT) does CD57 tests on his patients?

I have heard the same thing as MichaelTampa.
Not all LLMD's even use this test for adults.
I've had mine checked 3 times and got 3 wildly different results.

My son is seeing Dr J in two weeks, I will talk to him about it and report back. I remember reading something about him saying he does not find it as useful in kids. If I can locate the source I will report back too.

It was actually a CD of last year's ILADS conference where a Dr. J, I believe of CT, made the comment I posted above. Just listened to that CD today.

From 2010 ILADS takeaway thread:
CD57 suppression may occur in XMRV as well as in Borrelia. (Editor's Note: There was also talk at this event of Chlamydia pneumoniae causing CD57 depression as well as a discussion of CD57 going down when one is in the midst of a Herxheimer or die-off reaction. Thus, it seems that CD57 may not be as specific for Borrelia as may have been previously believed. That said, I do still believe it is an important marker to help provide additional insight as to whether or not someone may have Lyme disease and when they may be able to stop antibiotic therapy with a lower possibility of relapse.)
Dr. S shared the following on the topic of testing:
* Band 39 is the most specific for Borrelia * IgM Western Blot has more possibility of a false positive result than the IgG Western Blot * CD57 may be affected by Borrelia, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Tuberculosis * CD57 will generally go down within 3 months of infection * According to Dr. S, the test is valid for children (though responses may be exaggerated) though Dr. J shared that he did not find it to be very helpful with children * CD57 may go down with Herxheimer reactions. Inflammation may result in a drop in CD57 * Elevated CD57 such as 400 may occur. HIV patients do exist with high CD4 counts as a corollary though the CD4 cells may not work well or function properly. Thus, CD57 can tell us the quantity of the cells but the issue may be the quality or whether or not the cells can function optimally. (Another practitioner suggested that many cases of high CD57 show drops in CD57 results once treatment begins)

I just got off the phone with my son's LLMD who trained with Dr. J. last summer. She said he has stated repeatedly that he doesn't think the CD57 is reliable with children under 12.
My son is 12... and he was having a bunch of tests done and she thought it couldn't hurt to do that test. When she showed me the results, she had told not to worry about it... and I wasn't (too much).
Thank you MichaelTampa, momintexas, & LymeXtu. I will take that info and file it away.
Sometimes there is TMI!
