What does diflucan interfere with?

I was surprised my LLMD didn't put me on diflucan for my yeast. I think he mentioned it maybe interfered with rifampin?

Not sure about that, I just don't know. But if your cytochrome P-450 liver detox pathway is pushed with another drug that uses it, the Diflucan can be too much as that also used the C P-450 pathway.

If your LLMD mentioned it "maybe" interferes, well, that's a good reason. You can search the drugs but also, his decision may be based upon his experience. Good thing you have a doctor with a brain.

Also, your doctor may think your liver just can't handle the Diflucan with the lyme toxins and the chemicals of the medicine, too. "Interaction" can just mean "adds too much stress to the liver" in many cases.

I found Olive Leaf Extract to work exceedingly well to prevent candida when i've been on abx. And it's not going to overwhelm the liver but, rather, help support it.

=======

Curious, I just took a peak at Google. Yes, "Rifampin should be used with caution in patients with porphyria." That means it needs the C P-450 detox liver pathway.

By adding another Rx that also requires / stresses that same pathway, it could spell many problems with elevated porphryins.

Good thing not to combine the two as many lyme patients have enough trouble with excess porphyrins as it is. You are taking some good liver support, I assume, as that is helpful as is having lots of natural beta carotene in your diet.

Keebler,

Prevent... but does it kill yeast?

So destroy and prevent? : )

I'm taking freeze dried garlic too

But, it good to also remember that, for patients with any kind of porphyria, it's not just about interactions. It's about what drugs use what liver pathways, too.

A safe combination on paper for one person may be a toxic combination for someone with liver issues.

canefan,

If one has a full blown case of systemic candida, I don't know if OLE would kill it all. I've used it before starting abx, during and after and never had a hint of candida for 2 months at a time - the longest I was able to be on abx.

Before, I had lived on and off abx for 20 years, about a total of 9 months each year - before I found out I had lyme and other tick infections but I was just a walking case of candida. No doctor ever even told me about candida ('71 - '91). I did about 6 weeks of daily diflucan in the early 90's and it took care of it. I did not know about OLE or even at that time but it might have been interesting to see.

Later, if on any abx, I would first take OLE and keep with it. Total prevention. For an established case of candida, if one cannot take diflucan, they might ask their LLMD about using both allicin and OLE, sometimes separately, sometimes combining - and rotating ever so often - to help prevent any sort of resistance. Adding goldenseal to the rotation may help.

I am not any kind of health professional. What I write is based solely upon my experience, what some MDs or NDs have taught me - and things I've read. Anything I say - well, consider it just a suggestion of what to ask your LLMD about. Always proceed with care.

To save time and energy I often write in the directive voice: do this, or that . . . still, just suggestions to give some thought and consideration - and further study. I am no poster child for success (yet) but I've learned from (some) mistakes and want to help others have an easier time during this arduous journey.

Is that combination not working, then? Is that why you wanted Diflucan?

(You said "I was surprised my LLMD didn't put me on diflucan for my yeast.")

Adding OLE or Goldenseal might help. Neem, too.

Seagate has a reputation as the best OLE and I also like it in the formula: White Tiger Myrolea-B:

Well, it worked for 6 months!!

Then I cheated on my diet and slacked on my probiotics for one weekend and BAM. It hit me like a truck.

Pretty crazy how strict we have to be.

So I guess I just need to be patient because it might take weeks before I kill this yeast attack?

The drug interaction link above is a good one - I had questions about adding diflucan with my current cocktail and it gave me good info on what was okay and what wasn't.

Rifampin had a moderate interaction I believe, but it was still do-able. I had issues with the Zith and the Diflucan.

It's a good website to keep handy.
