The LLMD has prescribed plaquenil to help potentiate the zithromax.

I'm very worried about the possible tendon damage. We're in the middle of the babs protocol and doing ancillilary tx for Bb; at this point I'd rather finish off with babs and try another approach to finish of the Bb.

what have your experiences with Plaquenil been? Any spectacular successes?

It has been very helpful, although it's not a cure. It gives you a burst of energy, and clears some of the neuro fog away. When I don't take it, I do notice a slight difference in fatigue/stamina levels. But other abx/herbs have done more.

tendon damage isn't at all aconcern with plaquenil..and it's great for two reasons.

zithromax alone cannot get inside the cells to kill the keets..with plaquneul, the blood ph will change and allow the zithro to become intracellular and get INTO the cells to work better at killing them.

secondly , there is some research that shows that plaquenil is effect in killing some of the cyst form of the spirochete as well.

it's also an antimalarial and works well for babesia..i guess that's three reasons. I've been on it' steadily now for over 2 years while all my other meds have changed for coinfections ect..it's been my mainstay adn i'm about 95% better...

I think it's great, and i've had no prblems what soever on it..

oh, and it's an antiinflamatory as well, many times used with lupus patients for that very reason....

I've had an eye exam every 6 months for 2 year with no problems. I will say that Plaquenil caused my hair to fall out & when I stopped taking it, it stopped falling out. It's a listed side effect. Many don't have this issue but I did.

A base line eye exam would be a must and checks after like lyme said. I have been on it since Jan. with Zith and have seen improvement all around but still have a ways to go with the Babesia I think. Good luck

Thanks so much, everyone. The pharmaceutical info said depression of tendon response, but I wasn't sure how severe that might be. The doc did ask that the baseline eye test be done.

The babesia treatment is finally going really well -- at the 3 month mark, things have finally turnes around. So, onwards and upwards.

I can't tell you anything good or bad about plaquenil. I am on it with biaxin and I understand that it is meant to help the abx get into the cells where the keets can burrow into after you are in the chronic phase of Lyme.
Hope you have luck with it.
