Lately when I get hungry I get all weird. I get lightheaded and shaky.

Kind of like I have low blood sugar or something. I don't think that is the case, I just had extensive blood work and my blood sugar was fine.

And it's not when I starving and hadn't eaten in 10 hours. It's happening and I'm eating at my normal times.

I usually eat dinner about 5 or 5:30, I know I sound old, but after teaching all day I need some grub.

Anyway, I didn't eat till about 6:30 last night, not that late, and I thought I was going to pass out.

I felt better after I ate. This has been happening often. Anyone have this? Is Lyme causing this...yeast? Any ideas?

Here's my ideas:

1. Yeast-To deal with this you should try a yeast-free/sugar free/lo carb diet, take pro-biotics and anti fungal like nystatin, garlic or caprylic acid (there's plenty on this board about going yeast free.)

2. Hormone imbalanace-Read "The Hormone Solution by Dr. T. Hertoghe

3. Detoxification reaction: Drink lots of pure water, eat pure foods, take saunas and ride it out.

Anyhow I'm sure the wise ones around here will have more ideas. Hope you feel better soon.

I don't know what your Lyme situation is, but it sounds similar to what I have experienced.

I eat small meals throughout the day to avoid this problem. When I am starving it is the same for me as being stressed or tired. I get extremely weak.

Don't know if it's yeast or not. I am on abx, but take probiotics.

Lenny,

Those are classic signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). You can have "reactive hypoglycemia" and it not necessarily show up on a fasting blood sugar test.

So, pay attention to your symptoms and eat something that is not going to further lower your blood sugar. if you have reactive hypoglycemia and eat something high in carbohydrates it will further lower your sugar and the symptoms will get worse.

A protein snack is the best to prevent this.

Tell your physician about it. And do not go more than four hours without eating a snack.

Also, check to see if you are consuming acesulfame K in anything that your are using...read the labels.

``Acesulfame K stimulates insulin secretion in a dose dependent fashion thereby possibly aggravating reactive hypoglycemia ("low blood sugar attacks")..

If you are a student be certain to eat a snack before class or before a test. Hypoglycemia can greatly alter your performance on academic tests by effecting your concentration and recall abilities.

Best of health to you,

Maggie

I also get this.

If I don't eat after I start to feel ill and shaky, I will get moody, dizzy, headache, etc.

Then, when I do try to eat, sometimes I get so nauseous that I can't even take a bite! It's terrible.

When I do get shaky, I try to drink orange juice until I can get some food into me. Orange Juice usually does the trick.

I teach too, and it can be more physically demanding than you'd think to stand on your feet & lecture all day.

Do you drink a lot of coffee/caffeine to get you through the day? (The teacher's curse! ) That can lead to your system revving, then crashing even worse. Better to get some energy drinks that you can take with you into class, like a bottled yogurt smoothie. And that's great for yeast, too - a twofer!

I know it's hard if you're taking abx - I've lost about 15 pounds since I began them in August. I'm just not hungry until my body is practically whimpering with fatigue & dizziness. It's frustrating since I (like you) get nauseated when confronted with a big ole plate of hot food.

In my experience it's best to eat small amounts *before* you get hungry. I do best with liquids since they go down so much easier.

* Handfuls of nuts - keep baggies of almonds, walnuts, peanuts, roasted soybeans etc, in your desk & grab some right before class.
* Yogurt
* Boiled eggs
* Thermos of broth to sip
* Beef/chicken jerky
* pre-packaged string cheese

I'd avoid the Slim-Fast type "energy" drinks, since they are typically high in sugar & will just give you a crash an hour later.

Good luck!

This happens to me too, mostly if I have a small breakfast and skip lunch. Around 4pm or so I'll start to feel shaky and weak. Usually a couple string cheeses will help and then I eat a big dinner and do ok.

what are pro-biotics?

They are supplements that replace all of the "good" bacteria in your intestines that your abx kill. Like acidophilus, etc...

Lyme also infects the pancreas....

so, yes it is wise to go after the yeastie beasties...however, your pancreas just isn't working right anyway.....in my opinion.
