I've read in European literature that the 23 kD band is highly specific to Borrelia Garinii.

Does anybody know if this is correct?

The 23 kDa band is not specific to garinii.

The 84 kDa band, however, is specific to garinii.

Other noteworthy strain specific bands:

The 13 kDa band is specific to Bbss and afzelii.

The 17 kDa band is specific to afzelii.

Unfortunatly, US labs don't test for afzelii and garinii specific bands 13, 17 and 84.

Why, I don't know.

Personally I would like to find out which strain I have, as I have only neurological symptoms, which supposedly is mainly seen in garinii infections.

I'm from Europe, but live in the US now. Though my infection stems from my Euro days.

In Europe they have all three strains, while the predominant strain in the US is Bbss.

Thank you for the explanation.
I will post back if I find a US lab with capabilities to test for other genospecies of borrelia.

Quick note...

Igenex Western Blots and PCR's are made from several culture mediums and are able to pick up several strains.. not just senso stricto. That is why they are able to catch some of the strains not normally picked up on other tests... like STARI for one.

Perhaps contact them for more detailed info?
