Greenwich-based Time for Lyme Inc. held its "Time for Lyme Rocks Miami's South Beach" fund-raising gala April 2 at the Hyatt Regency in Old Greenwich.

About 500 supporters attended the event, which raised more than $1 million for the Columbia University Medical Center Lyme Disease Research Center, as well as for its ongoing education, advocacy and prevention programs. "Dateline NBC" correspondent Chris Hansen, a Stamford resident, served as master of ceremonies.

New York Times best-selling author and Lyme disease survivor Amy Tan accepted the Time for Lyme Public Awareness Award for her efforts to educate the public about this devastating illness through her writing and charitable activities. ESPN TV reporter Brooke Landau, a Ridgefield native now living in Los Angeles, spoke about her 7 1/2-year battle with Lyme.

Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner, bid on live and silent auction items, and danced to music with a Miami beat, organized by co-chairs Ken Bacco, William Bainbridge Steele and Lynda Withiam and their committee.

Corporate sponsors included Greenwich Capital Markets Inc.; Maclaren USA Inc.; UBS Investment Bank; Brooks, Torrey & Scott Inc.; Greenwich Hospital; Kenneth F. Bacco Inc.; Pyrenees Capital; CRT Capital Group LLC; Rings End Inc.; Goldman, Sachs & Co.; JetBlue Airways; Morgan Stanley; Subaru Distributors Corp.; and Tiffany & Co. of Greenwich.

Along with its partner, the Lyme Disease Association, Time for Lyme is dedicated to funding research that will find ways to prevent Lyme disease and find answers for those with late-stage Lyme. To that end, the organizations are partnering with Columbia University to endow the Columbia University Medical Center Lyme Disease Research Center, the first facility in the world focused on chronic Lyme disease. The goal of the Research Center is to develop more accurate diagnostic tests, better treatment protocols and a cure for chronic sufferers.

Thanks, Froggy! I was wondering how this event turned out. Those Greenwich people know how to put on a party! The invitation alone was spectacular. Wish I could have been there.

Thanks for the news. I have been biting my nails because we are not farther along with funding the Columbia center. Will sleep better tonight.

Thanks, Greenwich folks.

Nice to hear good news for a change, especially since I am having a lousy day. I was especially intrigued to see the reference to corporate sponsors. I don't think I've ever seen a Lyme event with actual corporate sponsors before.

Any $ that goes to the Lyme center endowment fund at Columbia is $ well spent. Folks, we NEED a LL research center at a respected teaching hospital BIG TIME! It will make a MAJOR statement in bolstering the credibility of our camp and we will all benefit from this research.

This is VITAL!

good news for everyone's hard work...

I would love to have my daughter go to the clinic..

Just let me know when they will accept someone that is only equivocal on WB or with positive urine tests and she will be on her way.

Well, the clinic is not established yet. Still need more money. It has taken a painfully long time to get this far. Like 5 years to raise about 2/3 of the money. Need 3 million total to get going.

Beats me why this has been so hard. Seems like a tick might have bitten several zillionaires or heads of big foundations by now. Do you suppose we are better tick-bait for some reason?

I knew there was a reason why I liked Jet Blue so much. This is very good to see. Maybe this is finally the beginning of the counter balance to the Yale crew.
